Looking for a 115v tig welder. What is the good/bad/ugly on the thermal arc 95s? What about the forney inverter? They are both about the same price, I'm still learning and don't know the difference on what an "inverter" actually is.Also is there any 115v that has the ability to do aluminum?Looking to spend under 1k. Aluminum isn't necessary but it would be preferred if I can get one for a few hundred more than the forney or 95s.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:The TA 95s doesn't give you an option for a remote pedal or fingertip controler. It's simply a basic scratch start DC tig. I'm not familiar with the other machine, but at a similar price, I'd guess it will have that same issue.A Maxstar 150 would give you the ability to use a pedal, but at a higher price tag. Miller's Dynasty 200dx will do thin alum on 110v, but at a price tag of almost $4K. It will give you 200 amps and the ability to do 1/4" alum on 220v however..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I don't have a 220 and this is just a hobby so I won't need anything that is over 1k. Simply to learn and for fun and my own little projects.Do any tigs come with built in plasma cutters that are worth anything? Is the foot pedal really that beneficial instead of just stopping and turning the dial?Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:When learning, most people I know find a pedal to be a big help. Yes you can learn without it, but it makes heat control more difficult. It's not about stopping to readjust the machine, it's about being able to vary the heat as you go along. If you find the puddle is getting too big and is about to melt thru on thin material, you just back off the pedal and lower your amps a bit until you get it under control and continue. Or maybe you have an area where the fit up is poor and you have a gap to fill. You can back off a bit so the puddle cools a bit faster and doesn't drop out on you. As you move along the material heats up, this means that a setting that was perfect at the start is now too high if nothing else gets changed. Without it you have to cool the puddle using the filler, adjusting your arc distance, speeding up or slowing down and are limited to a small range in making adjustments. Add to the difficulty by working with tube and clusters out of position, where the angle of the torch needs to constantly change, and things like speeding up becomes exponetially more difficult to do. This will limit what you can easily accomplish..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:This is the one I'm looking at.http://www.harborfreight.com/80-amp-...der-91110.htmlI don't see a tig torch at harborfreight.com but I'll have to go there and look. Got part numbers?I'm not worried about aluminum at all, it was just a question. I got a bunch of scrap metal from work that is mild steel that I plan to practice on for a long time.So just this welder and a torch and some fittings?Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer |
