I have a miller 251 that about 3 weeks ago started messing up.Welded a floor pan in a car and had welder set at 14.5 ,well it started welding very very hot.It would pulsate the spool of wire and feed it with out pulling trigger. You could unhook the wire for the gun and it would still feed the wire and arc if you touched it to surface that was grounded.Volt gauge would drop between 1.0-2.0 volts but welding like heat was wide open. You could touch spool of wire with machine off and it would shock you.Well sent it off (still under warrenty by 2 months) and they said it worked fine and nothing wrong but said that I was using to big of wire(.035) at volt setting is what caused it.Has anybody else had any problems with their mm251.
Reply:i hate to sound stupid but did you have the battry disconnected on the car?. it sounds to me like you might have either a bad gun, or the spool of wire is touching the chassis of the machine with a stray strand on the spool.StangnetShop Full Of Stuff. Joey
Reply:Thanks for reply. The car has no battery ,engine or trans, just shell in the process of frame off restoration. When I unhooked the wire that connects the gun to the machine, shouldn't this had elimanated the gun at fault?
Reply:Is there an update on this? I'm considering a MM251 as a replacement for an older unit.
Reply:Hey i have a mm251 and used it everyday for about 8 months and now use it a couple of times a week and its excellent. send it back again or have a welding supplier (some one who sells miller) come and check out the welder. That welder is alot of money and i would be pissed if they brushed it off!! Good luck.
Reply:I use .035 on my 251 with that and lower voltage settings with no problems what so ever. I would say .030 would be better suited for auto-body work though. I would have the dealer come out and watch you or take it to him and demonstrate the problem.Millermatic 251Century 180 migSpectrum 625 Syncrowave 250DX |
