So i got a promotion at work today! i am now in charge of our QA (quality assurance) department at my plant. i work for a structural steel company in denver co. i was in training all day with an QA inspector from our other plant. he will be taking his cwi test in a few months, which got me thinking. whats all involved in the getting your cwi, how much it cost, and whats the starting pay (approximately) very interested in this but really know nothing about it. any help??thanks beags
Reply:you have to pass a series of 3 test and get above a 72% on them. 1 test is you have to see if the test specimens(root-face bend, tensil pull, ect.) pass or fail, these specimens are in plastic form and they are either right on the pass or right on the fail mark so take some time reviewing test specimens. the other test is on basic knowledge kinda with safety questions, processes questions, ect. the other test is an open book but not an easy one out of the aws D1.1 or the (API1107?) as for cost im not sure but im sure your employer can point you to the right spot. I am going to be taking my CWI in a year or so hopefully, ill post up more info tomorrow that might help a little more, im a little tired from a long day of work and the brain isnt working great ha. how is work in denver? my GF wants to go to law school out there and I am into climbing, snowmobiling, snowskiing-waterskiing so i think it might be a good place for me to go, but I want to find a fab shop or something to work at, you know any places that might be hiring by any chance?
Reply:by the way just got back from there sunday, my brother had his bachelor party in keystone. went to a few good bars downtown on sunday and of course shotgun willies hahahaha.
Reply:As barefooter said about the test is accurate but all three are timed to 2 hours. As a CWI myself I can tell you that it is a difficult test but you do have to know a wide range of knowledge about ALL welding process's, NDE and many other things as well. So my question is... How is your knowledge of D1.1 or the code you are working to? You may want to start familiarizing yourself with it ans the clients specs. More times than not the clients specs will meet and exceed the applicable code you are building to.For the CWI part if you go to AWS.org and look up certifications you will find what the requirements are to apply for the test. The pricing depends on if you want training on it before you test.. For myself said and done it was around 3000 for everything including hotel food ....
Reply:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you check the AWS website they can give you all the information about cost and requirements to take your CWI test. Pay varies depending on location, experance, and type of inspection work. Shop inspectors in my area start around mid to high teens and third party inspectors start in the low to mid twentys.AWS Certified Welding Inspector, certified welder (unlimited 3G/4G)NDT and Coatinge inspectionShieldarc 250Presion TIG 225Alpha 200xChop sawDrills / grindersband sawoxy/acetylene hand toolsEtc....
