Hello i just got my "hobart handler 175" hooked up and ready to weld. Problem is I  am not. So can anyone recomend reading suggestions that are good for a new welder? Also I bought this welder used for a steal cost me more to hook up the elctricity than it did to get the machine. Any suggestions on how to test and asses the condition of the welder. What i need to look for parts that may need to be changed etc?Ill give you the run down on what i do know about the machine. The welder as said is a hobart handler 175 mig welder with gas port on the back currently connected to argon mix. May switch that over to heli mix because mainly i want to do some stainless work. when i tested the welder the the wire feed was working just fine but i didnt get a good arch out of it. I was how ever testing on a old nasty rusty pice of steel that came off a oustide fire pit so i am thinking that it didnt get a good contact from the electrafied gator clip (sure there is a name for this thing but I dont know what it is). I was only able to get it to arch once for a second. The tip is also rather nasty could that be causing my lack of arching. only reason i tested it under those conditions is i wanted to make sure the machine was working before i paid the electrician. So i grabed the nearest thing i could find that i figured was carbon steel and tried to give it a shot. The wire was E71T-GS so i know it wasnt that. You may ask your self why would some one buy a welder without testing it. Wasnt really a option at the time garage sale for the items of a bereved.mainly though i am asking for  literature to get me started thanks. I do have a pdf copy of the instruction manual for the welder and i have read It. I dont expect you guys to do my leg work for me in regards to assesing the welder but I would appreciate your wisdom if you have experince.
Reply:Both Lincoln & Miller have fine fundamentals of welding books.  Maybe go to your local LWS & see if they have a copy & pick one up.  Or if you happen to have a local college with a welding program, check out their bookstore.  They may have a book they use that teaches the welding process to students.Otherwise, stay here & review all the information available.  There is lots of people coming almost daily asking similar questions.  Best thing to do with the HH175, practice, practice, practice.  Get used to mild steel first, 'T' joints, then butt welds, then flat plate.  Replace your tip, adjust the welder according to the chart inside the door for the metal being welded, then take a picture or two.Post the pictures here & there will be lots of advice.  The HH175 is a great little welder & is fairly easy to run.  Just take the time to practice.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:It would not be the electricians problem if the welding machine does not operate properly. You need to get some instruction from a experienced welder. A lot of issues here. You cannot use the same gas mix for steel as you do for stainless steel.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:Check with your local library for welding related references. On the Miller site click or highlight the 'Resoures' tab in the header and you'll see literature and videos available for download. Lincoln has some excellent literature, including The Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding, from the following link.https://ssl.lincolnelectric.com/foundation/Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
