Today at school we finally got to experiment with STICK WELDING! I hated it, and I think it hated me. He made us go vertically down. I know, I went to fast hence, the not so fancy work. I used a cutting torch for the first time, he was surprised that I was the only one in the class to actually cut through the metal  chicks rock.I even got the nick name "sparky". Lmfao. Good times. These are pictures of my so called "stick welding" work (60/10)I know they suck, So bash on me ALL you want. Cause I'm the most rad chick in Metal Fab.  *insert welding gibberish here*                    Mandy
Reply:looks like you need more heat, what was your amperage set at?
Reply:I think your only problem is your instructor. I consider vertical down as an advanced technique. Not that it's that hard once you get used to telling the puddle from the slag but not any way to learn stick welding. Nor would I start a person out with 6010. It's not a bad rod and it's what you use for verticle down. 6010 will have more spatter than other rods. But he's your instructor and the key to making good grades is learn to give the teacher what they want to see. Hopefully you'll get a chance to run some flat beads with 6013 or 7014. Keep at it, the more you do it the better it and you'll will get.
Reply:a female who welds and from what I take from your sign on name has a ls1 Trans Am.  Where have you been all my life. All that aside, I agree the it looks as if you need more amps.Victor OXY setupMiller Thunderbolt XL AC/DCLooking for a Miller Mig
Reply:Could just be me, but I cant be sure from the picture focus looks like the amps are ok the bead looks as if were ran to fast. Cant be sure with the pics being a little blurry.Miller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 130 XPLincoln HD 100 Forney C-5bt Arc welderPlasma Cutter Gianteach Cut40ACent Machinery Bandsaw Cent Machinery 16Speed Drill PressChicago Electric 130amp tig/90 ArcHobart 190 Mig spoolgun ready
Reply:Learning to start and maintain an arc with stick electrodes is hard enough in the flat position. I can't understand why an instructor would start a student off in verticle down with them. It is really easy to do but after you learn the basics, not to start.

Reply:Sorry for not posting these up sooner, I got busy busy busy.Second day in Welding class...6010 straight bead practice..--------------------------------------My first time T welding, This is using 6010, but I passed the the test by also doing one with 7010. ------------------------------------------My welding bay. Pretty simple.---------------------------------------Some idiot kept messing with my welding machine everytime I left for lunch,  I knew who it was, so I left this on his welding table. Got a good laugh out of it.*insert welding gibberish here*                    Mandy

Reply:When I did my first welds going down, that was just to give me an idea of welding. Since I actually gotten to start to take the class like a week ago, I've just been going left-to-right or right-to-left horizontal, Since I passed my T welds, my latest project is V welds. And I hate them already!I rarely have my rod stick unless, I'm doing U's on my V weld groove, and thats where I make holes...*insert welding gibberish here*                    Mandy
Reply:From what I can see in the new pics, you're deinitely making progress. Those stick welds look better than my MIG welds. Good job!Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 Stick Linde HDA-300 MillerMatic DVI MIG Miller Dynasty 200DX Hypertherm Powermax 1000

Reply:V grooves aren't too too bad I'm getting the hang of it, I'm not burning any holes anymore which is rad.I was told I got good penetration on the first couple beads, I think thats good? lol.I should be finish with it tomorrow. Its VERY time consuming lol.Pictures to come..*insert welding gibberish here*                    Mandy
Reply:A butt weld is when the metal plates are butted up end to end, in line with one another.V groves are generally simple.  Ask your teacher about doing a lap-t-corner from 1/4" plate.  We did so many of those back in the day...  They're good practice.  Instead of welding the V, you weld the corner. This'll make more sense!  It's a side view, they're basically 12" long strips by whatever you have on hand for plate.  Best of all, it's great for torch cutting practice too.  If you start out with 3 larger plates, you cut off the portion you've welded, and you can re-use the rest until it gets to small to do so with!Last edited by mb_welder; 07-23-2008 at 07:01 AM.
Reply:Not looking too bad. Get the hang of the 6010 because you will be using it for open roots from now on. If you can run 6010 you can run 7010. Both like a beveled or fillet joint. Just burning beads on flat stock always humps up unless you run real hot and real fast. Getting a good handle on it downhill will make uphill much easier on you. It works, but it's never pretty. The best trick I can tell you for running 6010 is run it as hot as you can stand. Don't worry too much about sticking the occasional rod. I've burned tons of them and still do it from time to time. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
