You know the rules... The new guy is sent to the morgue, and gets put on the stalled pet projects list, to see what he can do.The dipper stick cylinder on this backhoe is leaking. My guess is that truck driver A, chained the machine down by passing a chain over the boom B. Operator C extended the stick, -not realizing this would cause insufficient clearance between chain and hydraulic tube- thus crushing hydraulic tube D between chain and boom, causing leak at fitting E.Attachment 21950Notice the close clearance between boom and cylinder, when extended.Someone's long forgotten welded lock had to be cut off.Attachment 21946When "the new guy" couldn't loosen the tight fittings with close clearance, I showed him how to hook three wrenches together, he was dumbfound. I thought everyone knew that trick. To prevent contamination, the hose fittings are rinsed with a bit of acetone spray, before being removed and capped.Attachment 21947Wait a minute... that may be the wrong picture! The damage:Attachment 21948Looks like the leak is at a welded fitting that, pulled apart where furnace brazed. The fix could turn out to be just another braze job, don't know yet.To be continued...Last edited by denrep; 10-19-2010 at 11:32 PM.
Reply:Very interestingSo pooch there is not the new guy I take it  weld it like you own it
Reply:When the Hoe is down in this meaning no $$$$$ is being made..On the other hand.......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Are the Lincoln and the wheel loader and the bully all in the morgue too?Nice record of what's been done, can't wait to see what happens next. How is the slew drive set up there, hydraulic motor or twin cylinders? Also the controls look to be quite low. All the locally made ones here were quite high, particularly on ones using hydraulic motor units for slewing.I'm looking at mounting a similar sized backhoe on a trailer for a little drainage work. I've got a solid trailer as a base and it'll be a lot easier than trying to mount it on an agricultural tractor and building a large support frame to suit the tractor."One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:So braze it was.The fitting heated up, to draw the braze deep into the split seam:Attachment 21993Some buildup, to add a little strength:Attachment 21994Zapster -  And I thought the hoe-down was some sort of barn dance.Oh; it is you say! Lewray - No, pooch is not the new guy... buy she figured out where he stashed his lunch! She knows it's wrong too, we watched her distress over stealing it. Picked it up and put it down about three times, before deciding to try go for it.Chenry - Three wrenches... I don't know the exact math, but it really multiplies the torque. Compound leverage, the tenth wonder of the world!Tanglediver - What happened? The little guy looks like he's about to take a bop on the head!Tractapac - The lower mounted  controls are for the infrequently used functions, the higher mounted controls require constant hands-on, while digging. Yes, the swing on this machine uses cylinders; but I know what you mean, I've seen swing driven by motor, and even chain and sprocket. Let's have a look at your traila-hoe one of these days!  The Lincoln... it could use a days tinkering. The bully is mostly just at rest, for lack of a big push job.Last edited by denrep; 10-19-2010 at 11:32 PM.
Reply:we used to replace those fittings quite frequently with machined right angle weld fittings that you could place an oring boss fitting in then connect the tube to the oring fitting.got tired of fixing those brazed fittings.insert thoughtful quote from someone else2000 Thermal Arc 300GTSW 3.5 hours1946 Monarch 20 x 54 Lathe1998 Supermax 10x54 Mill2004 Haco Atlantic 1/2" Capacity Lasernot mine but i get to play with it
Reply:Ok, here's a trailer hoe. This was when we got it and it was like dealing with an octopus, with all the rams moving and not enough chains to haul them all in tight. You'll see how high the controls on it are though. It would have been on a Massey Ferguson 50R Industrial tractor originally. It's a wee way down the project list at the moment. When I get to it, I'll post it as a project."One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for."
