anyone recently done a cwb check plate? doing practice for one & not sure how inspector usually wants beads stacked after you do your stringer and weave on the root pass.
Reply:After you have had your stop starts looked at there is no set rule on the number and exact location of passes to fill the test plate. Excessively high cap (over 1/8th) or undercut is cause for rejection. There is no rule concerning the cap. It can be one wide cap or stringers.
Reply:you might have to watch your weave width they generally dont want to see a weave wider than 3 times the rod width and some tests will only qualify you for the size rod you are using if it is 3/32 you might want to throw in a pass or 2 of 1/8th to give you the unlimited certs.but then again you will have to find out what the specific test requirements.After the arc has died the weld remains
Reply:Thanks for reply lotechman and Boilermaker237 ; all I knew about it before was that the test started in vertical 3G and finished in overhead 4G, using 7018 1/8'' rods.
Reply:1/8" 7018Root fillet done in 3GF position.The rest is done in 4GF position.How it was explained to me -- You have to have the inspector look at your stops and starts. Reply:I just did mine and passed. Yes you do have to do a weld half across the plate, get it checked, then finish the weld across the plate. Then pile your welds up to near the top. Secret is let your plate cool before the cap pass to prevent undercut! I have seen so many people do it all at once and have undercut on the cap pass. Also the 1/8 max cap pass is defiantly true. Another good tip is make sure your metal is shinny clean before doing your weld. Then chip the slag and wire wheel the crap out of it. Less impurities the better. Last but not least, good luck!
