I have a little 200cc cheap china atv and the swing arm on it broke, which was tissue paper thin so no wonder it broke. Anyway i decided to try to make a new one out of some thick pipe i had laying around. Notched and fitted up weldingTacked upFinished Welds (double passed)Guess what, after all that the engine died (and i mean dead!!) so theres no fixin this up anymoreSo it was a good learing project. Reply:Did you get it put back together?I would like to see that. In all honesty I know lots of guys who do the same thing on top notch atvs just to get long travel. I wouldn't attempt the job without a jig though.Keep welding and keep posting pics. Reply:Homemade jig to hold the pipe straight in the drill press, using a hole saw bit to notch the tubing. I agree with the crater it showed up once i put a second pass down. This one was done only on a 110 unit maxed out at about 90 amps.
Reply:I wouldn't be too concerned about a little porosity, doesn't look that bad, in fact looks as though the molten puddle has had time to seal off the ejecting gas. If you grind those welds, they will look worse as there is most probably some embedded pores in the welds. You have ample weld on those joints for strength, a little porosity is not going to weaken the structure significantly. |
