Trailer gate

A buddy of mine has asked me to weld up a drop down gate for a small utility trailer thatis mainly used to haul a four wheeler.  The gate will be about 4 feet tall and 6 feet wide and will be used as a loading ramp.  What kind of hinges would be the best for this?  Thanks for the help.

Reply:A good heavy duty hinge can be made out of 3/4 inch schedule 40 pipe and 3/4" solid rod. Three feet of pipe and three feet of rod. Cut the pipe into 4- 4" pieces and 2- 6" pieces. Cut the rod to 18". Place 1- 4", 1- 6", and 1- 4" pipe on the rod and weld the 6" piece to the trailer gate where you want it. Do the same on both ends of the gate. Hold the gate with the hinge against the trailer and tack the 4" pieces to the trailer leaving a 1/8" gap between each piece of pipe. Tack all the pieces and check for proper operation before welding solid. A heavy cotter pin can be put into each end of the rod to keep it in place.
Reply:i agree with the other replies. do make the gate removeable though for you never know when you might need that extra room for loading longer things on the trailer.

Reply:Here in washington state, some of the steel supply houses carry things like that. Pacific steel is one. You may check your local supply house for steel hinges.Bill
