I've been reading a lot on this board.   There's lots of good info here.I'm ready to start practicing, and have done a little.  What should the welding sound like?  I have listened to TIG once before, and I remember it sounded like a loud buzzing sound.  However, with my machine, I seem to get the best puddle when it is not buzzing, and is much quieter.  Through the lens, it looks much like the flame from a acetelyne torch, is that what it should ook like?  Also, what do you use for fill metal.  I went looking for TIG filler rod here in Shanghai, and could not find anyone who knew what I was talking about.  I found stick rods, and mig wire, but nothing for TIG.  Is there special filler rod for TIG, or do you just use mig wire or acetelyne rods?  I want to do steel, some stainless, and aluminum. Thanks for help.
Reply:depening on your machine the buzzing is the h/f  on start up i use a miller enco tig at work and wen it buzzes loud i stop and restart my weld and it will stop my v 160 t dont make a lot of noise nore dose my dilarcChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:the "buzzing" is usually when your running a.c. and tigging aluminum..only thing i hear when doing d.c. neg. is the gas coming out of the torchthats my story and i'm sticking with it...now....what do i do with all these funny colored eggs?  ...zap!
Reply:my guess is the buzzung is from running hugh frequency, how far are you holding your arc away
Reply:if youve got it set on ac with hf on continuous it will buzz.  You want this for alum like chopper said.If youve got it set on DC you want hf only for start.  Then it will be quiet only hearing the gas like zap said.  This is for steel and stainless.  If you run constant hf on dc for steeel it wont weld wellIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:My welder has only DC and pulsed DC.  I am using it on pulsed DC.  That all makes sense, it buzzes until the "flame" starts going well, and then the buzzing goes away.  So, I guess I am doing it right. What about filler rod?  What should I use for steel and aluminum?
Reply:steel=er70S6the alum will depend on the alum youre using....Zap knows his alum...give him specifics and **** give you good tight infoIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:70s7 works too, thats our shoop standard
Reply:So, just to be clear, (i really am a newby to TIG) there are specific welding rods made for TIG welding?  As I said, I asked at the place I bought my welder, and they had stick rods, but no TIG rods, and didn't seem to know what they were.  They kept pointing to the tungsten electrodes
Reply:You can use the filler that is made for tigging if you can find it.  I have used bare wire coat hangers for practice or for non-critical stuff (not a suggestion, just info there)...alternatively you can use mig wire cut up.  You can make thicker filler by using a drill to twist 4 or so strands of wire together.  Loop them around a fixed object (I use a vice handle) and put the other end in the chuck and spin until a little tight.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:ive used smiths drill motor suggestion at work...call me a genious they did.but the coat hanger is basically an rg 45...rod gas for gas welding.  the er rod has deoxidizers which are necessary with electric process to prevent perosity.though,  in a pinch, a good farmer would use thius....wouldnt leave it, but better than bailing wire IMHOIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:oh,  tig rods...ask for cut length ER70S-6  otherwise smittys thoughts will work.Id say 3/32" would be a good diameter.  Besides that id go with 1/16 and 1/8IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:Got it.  Mig wire it is.  That I can find easily here.Thanks.John.
Reply:for the aluminum i ues 4043 filler rod most the time you will need a tank of helium for Dc tig on aluminumyou filler will also depend on the aluminum aloy your welding on and what the part is used forLast edited by chopper5; 04-17-2006 at 06:25 AM.ChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
