Thinking about buying a used PowCon 400sm w/ a RC 250p pulse control ( inverter). Anybody got any comments as to how well this machine will perform Mig ( spray and pulsed) on 230/240 single phase ? and how well they hold up. Specs look good, single phase= 300amp 32v @ 60% duty cycle, but will it do it at the top end ? Any ideas as to value for a good machine ? Any comments greatly appreciated.
Reply:They are a geat machine, the dual processes are outstanding. I have the 250, and ran it for days on end and it still out proformed other machines. The simple change over from stick to mig/spray transfer is real nice. I do not know what you are paying for this unit, but i know it will be a nice machine to have in anyones shop. Good LuckBernie
Reply:I have the 300SM, and love it. Arc quality in stick is superb and I get more power from single-phase than I can use here. Jeff has loaned me a feeder for it and in my experiments so far, it short-circuits .045 with 84/16 gas very well, especially with the puddle control dial at maximum and pushing the puddle, with verticals down, and will even spray it with the same gas, though not quite perfectly. The manual says it really wants 98/2 Ar/O for spraying. If the price is good, you will have a great welder!
Reply:I had 3 Pow Con 300 ST & SM units, recently sold 1 300 ST with water cooler for $ 1,000.00. Parts can be purchased from Arc Products in San Diego for these machines. The units have performed well as the others said. I think for a package unit with feeder if its around $ 1500.00 or less its not bad, I personaaly would go around 1,000.00 though. Reply:Thanks guys for the input. I've been looking for something in single phase that I could use w/ 84/16 gas @ around 300 amp & 32 v for spraying, with a decent duty cycle. Looks like this machine would be ok. Thanks again.
