Start of a new piece of equipment for the farm.  Cutting up some tubing, and flat.Thought I'd put this up for folks that might be interested in gas cutting, and never did any before.  Primarily as an example of what a guy with no training, minimal skill, and practice, can do.  Kind of a little nudge to maybe give it a try. There's a ton of guys out there that are much better, and can add to this.  I only pick up a torch about once a month.PIC- 1   Silver pencils are available at the LWS.  More precise than chalk IMO.  Marking the side that I'm going to cut on with an "X" sure beats ruining a part.PIC- 2   What a decent cut (for me anyhow) should look like.  Paying attention to cutting a straight line, keeping the torch level, and the tip perpendicular to the cut, makes for less grinding later on.PIC- 3   I get these too .  Sometimes I cut a little too slow.  DON'T SWEAT IT.  Don't try to clean it up with a grinder.  Takes too long, and you might gouge the edge of the part.PIC- 4  It cleans up fine with a slag hammer.  Hit a few glancing blows down towards the slag, and you're there.PIC- 5   I like to finish grind the part with the layout lines facing up.  This way you'll grind to true dimensions because the cut line is most accurate on this side.PIC-  6  I can't stand running a grinder.  By cutting straight, and square, minimal grinding is required.  AS A CAVEAT...I only build farm equipment.  My stuff ain't gonna hang in any art museum   Also I like to cut to size instead of grinding to size on most things.  It's faster.  Clean it up, bevel the sharp corners, and y'as good to go.PIC-  7  About most of the stuff you'll need to build most things.  BTW.  If you're shopping for a grinder, get one with a paddle switch that can't be disabled!!!  Drop that baby, or your hand slips, it will shut off.  Beats the hell outta tearin' yourself up.PIC-  8   What all of this crap's gonna hang onPIC-  9   Got the bubblegum machine goin' againALL DROPCUTS  I'll celebrate that any ol' day.  For me, it's kinda like a hole in one. Reply:So far this looks like a minor threat to society and personal safety; But don't worry, we're watching!! Whatever sort of malice and mayhem you're brewing, ...it looks good. Thanks for the pics,Last edited by denrep; 09-17-2008 at 07:10 AM.
Reply:Hay spear?  Keeps the pics coming.  I use the silver pencils as well.  I never have liked the soapstone.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:i don't like using soapstone for layout, but i find i can't explain anything without it...
Reply:Nice work, please show us more.   You have different "workshops" Silver pencils end up really short and hard to hang on to. (I break em constantly)I break my soapstones in half and sharpen both ends on the bench grinder.   Hmmm maybe one of those carpenters pencil sharpeners..... Did I just hijack the thread?
