a customer dropped off an exhaust systm y-pipe from a mustang. Ford motor company has a bulletin specifically calling for 409 filler wire in the repair of a crack at a flange. no local supplier has 409 filler on hand. I've read that 309L is the right choice... it there a drawback to not using the 409 alloy as instructed?.... also, is it necessary to purge w/argon?
Reply:What is the base stainless? If it is 309, the 309 rod right choice. If it is 409, then you really should use the 409 rod. The properties of the 400 series stainless are very different and the crack could get worse. If it does get worse, the best set would be to sut the two pieces out far away from the weld and replace with new pieces. 409 stainless is very brittle to begin with and using a different filler rod would worsen the situation. DO you have a cronatron dealer in the area? They usually have everything in stock. I may have some 409, but I would have to look. If I do, I could send you say 3 rods to get you through. i will reply a little later.Tony
Reply:thank you for that offer.... I am going to try other sources before I impose on your kindness.
Reply:309L is the standard rod used on 409 stainless steel. 409 is just a cheap, crummy grade of stainless. It's pretty much mild steel with a little extra chrome in it. 309L works well for welding mild steel an works well for 409, too.
Reply:what about purging.... also, is straight argon acceptable for the sheilding gas (and the purging gas, if necessary)?

Reply:Sorry, I did not find any 409, but I do have some 347. I don't know if that will help you out though.Tony |
