I have a question that I hope someone can answer. I'm looking at buying a Millermatic 175, but I'm hoping that it will run off generator power so I can make it portable. I have a 5000 watt generator with surge up to 6250 watts. Has anyone here ran one off their 5000 watt generator? Thanks
Reply:I haven't run a MM 175 off a generator, but my MM 135 runs off one frequently. Your generator is more than big enough. The MM 175 is a transformer type machine, so it won't have a problem with the generator power. You only need 4800 watts @ 20a to run it full tilt. Have fun.
Reply:I wouldn't think youd have any problem either. I run my sp135 on the same generator and have them on a cart I can load in my truck for portability. I think it works better than on the house current.Bill W aka AntmanUp on the Mogollon Rim in Arizona. God and 4 Wheelers Country!
Reply:I have a 6500/8500peak Generac Generator and am seriosly concidering running a millermatic 175 from it.The Miller site lists the power consumpion as "Input power- 230V, 19.5 Amps, 60 hz, Single Phase"5000watts continuous should run it fine, but my question is what kind of plug is on the Millermatic? can a twistlock plug be put on it?
Reply:The Millermatic 175 has a 6P50 plug.  You can replace it with a twist lock or make up an extension with a 6R50 receptacle and twistlock plug.  I got 6-50 plugs and receptacles at the local Home Depot for about $9.  They have twistlocks but I don't know about the pricing.
Reply:Comes with NEMA 6-50P.  Feel free to chop it off and put on a twist-lock, or I recommend spending a little bit more money and making an adapting extension cord while you're at it.I ran my MM175 from my Trailblazer's AC generator for many a weld.
Reply:I think the mm-175 is the machine for me. it will do thin stuff when cranked down, it will run off of a generator, and will probably do pickup truck frame work  (spring hangers and stuff) with flux core.
Reply:I replaced the entire power cord, right up into the inside on my MM175, with a cable that's much heavier and about 25ft long with a twistlock plug on the end. I made sure to size the crimp-on spade connector that plugs into the circuit board correctly and crimped it very well. Welder works fine, and it's a lot easier to move around the shop (though the stock carriage they give you is a certified POS).
