Finally got a day to work on the threat to society, and personal safetyLast time covered cutting hinge blanks.  Today machining, and tacking blanks.  It's ugly.Pic 1-  Cutting holes in blanks for hinge pinsPic 2-  Second hole in blanks to be tapped later for pin retainer capscrewPic3-  Tapping holes using my high tech vise  (Gotta build a new table for that thing one of these days)Pic4-  Machined retainer platesPic5-  Cking. fit of retainer plate'Nother post following Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Now for the hinge pin, and retainer plate assy.Pic 1-  Drilling cross lube hole in pinPic 2-  Drilling thru lube hole in pinPic 3-  Aligning retainer plate/ hinge pin in hinge strap pack for weldingPic4-  Hinge pins welded, and retainer plate trimmed to fitAnd one more to follow Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Tramming hinge pin x&y axis, and tacking in placePic1-  Tramming hinge pin.  I like to set the ends, with cold roll in place, check height, then sight it in using the cold roll as a guide.  Then tack ends.  Check that cold roll is not in a bind, which would indicate out of square straps.Pic2-  After end straps tacked, fit and tack next set of straps again checking if there is a bind on the cold rollPic3-  Hinge pack, and hinge pin dry fitted prior to finish weldingPic4-  And that's about it for the day Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:looks like a clean job to me. i would love to have a mill one day but that's a wee bit down the road.  what size and kind do you have? and that's not a bad looking shop ya got there. looks like it full of toys!!!!!
Reply:That is a drill press he has; what I'm jealous of is all his ROOM!
Reply:The 1" holes were cut with a 3/4 horse drill press using an annular cutter.  The slotting was done on a 1 1/2 horse 6x26 knee milling machine.  Pretty small equipment, but it's the best I'll probably ever have.  I've been real happy with it.  Couldn't do this a year ago.  Used to have to punch large holes with a torch, and I didn't really like sometimes having molten slag blow back in my face when starting a hole. The container was the best money I ever spent.  But I sure wish I had a covered shop to work in.  Most everything gets done in the yard."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Originally Posted by farmersammI picked those inserts up about 5 years ago at this hardware store.  They're about the handiest thing I have to deal with round stock.  I think they cost about 20 bucks.  They have a magnetic strip on the top lip that keeps them in place while you do your setup.  It's gettin' pretty rare to find a vice, that's affordable, with machined grooves to hold round stock these days.
Reply:Originally Posted by duaneb55Does that vise go back in the shop when not in use?  As you well know, that container has some pretty stiff sides so maybe a shelf mount attached to one of them could work for a nice vise 'table'.  If you want or need to keep it portable, a 'receiver' type mount like a bunch of guys use on their welding tables would accomplish that.

Reply:Originally Posted by drivethruboy54When you are piercing with a torch, heres what i find the best way to do it.  I do it all day long, may work for you, may not.Preheat as usual, get it just under melting (little sparks will start to fly off) then rotate the torch so that the tip would now be pointed at either 3 or 9. Go easy on the oxygen 9 i like to feather it) once you hear it pierce all the way through rotate back to the center and make your cut.Pointing straight into the pierce will burn you up everytime
