Howdy Folks!, I have a simple question....Was just wondering what kind of rod you folks would recommend for welding a small hole in an exhaust manifold...any suggestions would be helpful, Thanks!
Reply:Assuming the manifold is cast iron  .....If it was me, I'd clean the hole well with a die grinder and carbide burr then preheat the manifold well with a torch and weld the area with nirod ,peening the weld well between passes then let the manifold cool slowly. If the hole is actually a crack then I would vee the crack out well then drill a small hole at each end of the crack to keep the crack from continuing on, then weld it as above.Happy welding Last edited by teknition; 07-28-2006 at 02:16 AM.
Reply:Preheat the whole piece in a barbeque grill then weld with stainless or nickel rod, after veeing out to bottom of hole or crack (drillstop the ends of a crack, as mentioned).  Cool slowly, preferably in dirt.Depending on the situation, many of these steps can be skipped or altered for budget/time constraints, but the best odds are with maximizing each step.
Reply:Another alternative is oxy-acetylene braze welding, and possibly TIG brazing with silicon bronze (Everdur).
Reply:Lincoln's Ni-99 rod is ecellent.I r 2 a perfessional
