I have a victor acetylene regulator which I bought new a couple years ago (super range II i think).Recently every time I use it there is a problem. When I open the valve on the torch ,after I set the psi on the regulator, it starts to make a thumping sound while the psi drops then goes back up, drops then goes back up. It does this continuously and every second. If I raise the psi on the acetylene regulator it still does it but faster.Its imposible to weld like this because the flame goes from neutral to oxidizing then back to neutral and back again and again over and over and sometimes the acetylene drops so low the torch pops and goes out.The most obvious cause that comes to mind would be that the regulator is dirty.I always crack the acetylene tank before I put the regulator on but it might still have gotten dirty somehow.Has anyone had this problem before? How do you recommend I fix this? Should I blow some compressed air in the reculator or could that just send the dirt further in the regulator? I would like to fix this myself without sending it in for repair.Maybe its got nothing to do with dirt.
Reply:Unless you've had training in rebuilding regulators, take it to the nearest welding supply shop and have them rebuild it for you. Sounds like the diaphragm is bad. You don't want to mess with an acetylene regulator unless you know what you're doing.I r 2 a perfessional
Reply:Diaphragm for shure....guy at my welding store lost his arm when a regulator exploded. He said it was dirt. Get it fixed. Crackin the valve is great, but you maybe got some bad gas with some jive in it.Miller blue star 2eLincoln 175
