So I need to weld the spring perches (1/4" - mild steel I assume) to the axle housing on the Jeep I am building the kid. I take it the housing is cast steel. What steps do I need to take to weld this? My machine is a Lincoln PM215, and I have a bottle of 25/75. Do I need to preheat with a torch, if so, to what temp? What type of wire should I be using? I plan to wire wheel down to clean steel, and clean with Acetone prior to doing the welding. If it matters, the axle is a Ford 8.8 out of a '97 Explorer. Thanks,Mike

Reply:Zap,I don't watch trucks, but I do watch Xtreme 4x4 with Jessi Combs. That girl can lay down a mean bead, and she is very cute. Can you explain what you mean by 'wrap the weld into the other side about 1/4 inch'?Thanks for the info,Mike
Reply:the perches are about 1/8 thick correct?wrapping means just that...start "inside" the pearch..come out and go about your buisness in the outside of it and when you come around to the other side you can only stick the mig gun in the opening so far befote it dont fit between the pearch and the housing...if you can reach it weld it all without stopping...do "dress rehresals"no welding just the motion....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Zap,Now I understand what you meant by wrapping. Actually the perches are 1/4" thick, nice and meaty. Thanks for your patience,Mike
