I recently purchased a 2006 Miller Trailblazer 301G with 1,000 hours on it, and along with that the guy gave me an oxyacetylene setup and a portaband. I've also got a dynasty 200 that I bought for smaller fabrication/TIG type stuff.I'm not real familiar with rig welding, but how much more would I need in order to try that out? My truck is an f250 diesel. I've seen most welding rigs are duallies, is that necessary? How much other equipment would I need in order to get into something like rig welding?I'm trying to figure out ways I can start working for myself and just looking at the options. Thanks guys

Reply:I've been welding for about 10 years. Doing it for a living for around 8. I'm certified in 2" stainless pipe TIG and SMAW 6" carbon steel and 2" TIG root/smaw fill/cap carbon steel.I've worked on hospital renovations and also in marine construction yards. I've worked part-time in fab shops doing mostly TIG welding. Thanks for the help ZAP and Donald!
Reply:Figured I'd give you guys an update. Got a call from a roll-off dumpster place that wanted some things welded/fixed. So I drove down there, about 25 miles from my house. The guy said he has been paying hourly and asked what I wanted hourly. I told him $50 an hour. He said "That seems pretty high, I'll have to look around for a cheaper price." So I then explained to him that diesel costs $4 a gallon for my truck. $4 a gallon for gas for the welder. Plus however much for consumables. And he just looked at me with a blank stare. Not sure what people expect, but I'm not going to work side jobs just to break even.
Reply:Unfortunately there are a ton of guys who "think" they can weld, who'll grab a cheap 110v mig or stick machine and a small gen set and do jobs like that. No insurance, or other legitamate business expenses as well, and they are happy to make more than they'd make working at Mc D's. Dumpster guys are also notorious for wanting this sort of thing done dirt cheap since they need a ton of repairs done all the time, as contractors beat the $hit out of them..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan |
