Well I finally had some time to get on top of practicing welding today. As I have done no reading on the subject more than what the ESAB web site has to say. I think I did ok. Keep in mind the first are flux core and I was just jacking around with the machine to get used to it. Not knowing what the speeds or settings did practically I was purposly puting the settings all high all low one high one low playing with the wire feeds roller pressure etc  etc. The latter welds are solid with gas. I screwed up on the wire switch and only hand tighend the nut that holds down the spool. Imagine my suprise when the nut fell off and the birds nest I made lol. I got a great deal on this chop saw from lowes it was a clearence item plust it had a missing button so I got them to nock even more of the cost off. I fixed it with a chop stick and epoxy works great. I think ill call my new welding hobby chop stick welding inc. Also these are the gloves I have they suck and suggestions on a nicer set??I did learn alot today I am not gods gift to welding but I am not the worst ever  I am sure. I can see I am not getting proper penetration in my welds but I was welding rather thick metal quarter inch and i had it set all the way up on all dials, exactly like the lid said. I am going to grab  beer and read the hobart guid on mig tonight maybe ill find the answer there. I am flirting with the idea that i did get good penetration but just cant tell will cutting the welds with the chop saw show this? Reply:There's lots of good info here (some videos, etc):http://www.millerwelds.com/resources...ur-skills/mig/And I'd order the student pack here (probably the best $25 you can spend):http://www.millerwelds.com/resources/tools/KevinHobart Handler 210Tweco Fabricator 181iLincoln Squarewave Tig 175
Reply:The "glassy looking spots" are normal, it's the de-oxidizers in the wire rising to the surface. Nothing to worry about. If you're looking for a nice set of gloves, try Miller's. If you can justify $20 for a pair, you'll fall in loveGive me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire.
Reply:Information on what machine you have as well as the wire size, material thickness and settings will help others offer suggestions on improving your welds. With out that info picts aren't worth much. Also the picts are almost imposible to see well. Add some extra light (best) or use the flash so we can see the beads better. I can't tell if the steel was dirty or not in the picts and what sort (if any) prep you did.Your bead with the silicone on top might be a decent bead, but the pict is so dark really can't see the toes to tell ( looks like it might be a bit cold because of it's height). As far as the weld that you comment looks "the best", It's got some serious issues. Looks like you were going way too fast at a minimum. I'm guessing since you started out with FC, this is a small 110v mig, maybe the HH140. Some of the material looks like it might be too thick for a machine in that class to weld correctly..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Hobart handler 175 .030 wire 220V . I do apologize for the crapy pics i have a good camera some one borrowed my flash card and i have not gotten it back i will take the pics again when I do so I will wait on cutting the welds to look for penetration.http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php
Reply:Even though your using flux core try cleaning metal up with grinder first. More heat cant have enogh heat. My millermatic 175 rarley comes of its top of 10 voltage unless I'm welding thinner that 11 guage or some other messed up stuffMillermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:Intresting to Know I took a look at those welds again today And there are certainly too cold. There standing about a 8th of an inch off the metal. Thats kinda why i thought of that one as the best out of the lot as it didnt have that plump little fat boy look. Its ok though need to read read read and then get back on it.http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php
Reply:the cat looks worried! he can see a pair of soft welding mitts in your future. In the words of the great philosopher Quagmire.Gigedy Gigedy Gigedy Gigidey Goo.
Reply:I agree. You'll be better served reading/studying Miller's GMAW Handbook than you are reading all that LIBERAL crap you've been reading. After having been a member of the board for nearly two years, I would have expected better results.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:So, since you included the picture, did you named your cat Hobart?    I have a Miller welder, but I named my cats "Garfield" - yeah, like the big fat one, and a Tortie is called Lola Beans.
