Whats the best way to do a horizontal weld thats on its side? Sort of like a vertical but runs from left to right . But the weld itselfis in the "Z" axis .. OR is it one of those things you dont do? Maybe I should do a picture? LOL I tried it for funzy .. and seemed easier to continuously add filler as I moved the torch along , instead of stop, add, move thing .. Which also seemed to work better with the "A" butt weld .  Youdont get the stacked look , but it seemed strong enough .. Zapster? You have suggestions here? Oh .. also .. say you do a beveled edge weld .. do to thickness, etcand you do the root pass and subsequent passes... do you flip the plateover and do the back side? If so when? If not, then why not?Thanks..Randy
Reply:pics would help alot......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:The width of the weld is in the Z Axis ..
Reply:With practice you ought to be able to weld in any position imaginable.  Yes, some positions are definitely much preferred over others, but sometimes you just don't have a choice in the matter.  The position you seem to be describing is fine to weld in - but it takes much more practice.  Looks like you did pretty well, but it did start to run downhill some.  The main thing that jumps out at me about that weld in the picture is it looks like you could have hit both parts with a grinder - looks like some scale on there.  Completely getting rid of the scale will help immensely in a position like that.
Reply:Another trick of the trade is to weld away from the end of the material. Heat flows in the same direction as the arc moves, so by the time you get to the end of the joint, the plate is very hot. Try starting at the other end and welding away from the corner; especially if you're a beginner, laying it flat or flipping it over because you should weld left to right if you're a righty and right to left if you're a lefty.Weldtek
Reply:ok thanks.. Yes I didnt grind it ..  But was 3:30 AM and was just playing around . and wondered what it would be like in that position .. Uhmm  so Weldtek... are you saying in a piece like that I should start at the end / corner, weld in almost to the other end / corner and then go to the opposite end / corner and start a weld BACK to the end of the first weld?So I dont get all that heat buildup melting of the edge at the end of the weld??One problem here is no foot pedal yet..  still looking for a wah wah music / volume foot pedal I can modify or a cheap enough used weldor foot pedal ..   If anyone has one, I am looking .. I would like to see a pic of the whole part, it's a little unclear from that pic, what you're doing. Also, generally after picking rod size, amps, stringer bead or weave; every other technique is just a manipulation of time to control the heat input to the part. Moving around, backstepping or just givin it time to cool down between beads, is going to improve strength and appearance, but you're on the right track there.Weldtek
Reply:yeah...weld from the ends in..do a "hot" root pass and then crank it down 20 amps or so and do a filler pass..for every action theres an equal and opposite reaction..when you tack one side tack the other if your doing both sides..weld one side then the opposite..etc..etc..keeps the bending to a minimum..and yes it needs to be as "bare metal" as you can get it first..this aint no mig gun... ...zapI am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
