This shop built socket was okay, but it wasn't gonna take the 600 ft lbs that were on schedule. It was too long, and had just a rounded 1-1/8 hex nut to turn it. No sense taking chances!Attachment 24851So I shortened it up. That's my 20 I won on a bet today.I found a chunk of scrap plate that was a close enough size "as is", changed the tool in the punch...Attachment 24850... and BANG let'er have it!A fast hot-glue job:Attachment 24852600 lbs here we come:Attachment 24853We have room for another picture so I'll tell you how the bet went down.Mechanic A said : "That spindle moves when you turn the hub"Mechanic D said : "Bull"Mechanic B said : "Yah it does, I saw it too"This went back and forth for a while. We spun the hub again and again, watched and argued, finally I said put the money up, 10 bucks each.Set up a dial indicator:Attachment 24854That's my 10 against their 20... Under the dial indicator base for safe keeping and final decision. It didn't move. Last edited by denrep; 10-19-2010 at 11:37 PM.

Reply:I'd of given anything to be there when that punch went through that piece of plate. Who says ya can't be destructive, and creative at the same timeI'd put another ten bucks in the pot to bet that your winnings went to buy lunch for all involved. Sounds like a really decent place to work. I can count the good ones I worked at on one finger on my left hand.Price tag on that torque wrench is about one truck payment for a new Dodge dually. I had the unpleasant experience of having to buy one last year. I bought the crappy import because I couldn't cough up the money for a good one. But it still amounted to more than a few C notes. Then folks b#### about the cost of repairs"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:good work, nice to know that our shop isnt the only one that is too cheap to buy the right socket. would be nice to have the square punches for our ironworker though, I am starting to run low on crappy sockets to weld on to all my creationssometimes I wonder why I became a mechanic... not many trades are expected to show up to work with $50k of their own tools
Reply:Some of my tools run in excess of $80,000.00 a PIECE for my job.
