On monday i am starting a job welding dumpsters(new). I was wondering if anyone here would know aproximatly what thickness steel would be used and if in what positions? (generally speaking).-thanks!
Reply:The dumpsters I have worked on have been either 10 or 12 gauge sheet.  The guy that owned them said that those were the options when he bought them.  I would plan for all positions, but horizontal and vertical are the ones I seemed to need the most.
Reply:We reapir them. Are you talking about front load cans or roll offs? Most of them are 10 Ga sheet. The sleeves on a front load are 3/16.  A roll off is pretty much the same, 1- Ga sheet the supports are 3/16 and the rails on the bottom are 3/8. (excluding hinges, latches, etc)Good luck with your new job, if you love welding you will have pleanty of work in the container world. If something opens up for you doing compactors and they will train you, JUMP ON IT!You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else. Albert Einstein
Reply:Dont know anything about dumpsters, but JR is right about the other opportunities.  If you get a chance look at any kind of heavy plant maintenance.  I was in a cement plant that had 5 seperate Batch plants and all of the rolling stock to support them.  Had plenty of opportunity to weld, wrench, and have end of the day satisfaction from doing a good job.  Definately a great trade to get in and stay in..BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:We've run pipe through County Waste in Lebanon NY, they MIGed their units, till their plant burnt to the ground. Cant say about their new facility....I have also run into their mobile mechanics, they repair the compactor style dumpsters on-site, and the guys I have seen, all Stick weld. If youve ever LOOKED at a dumpster, they very basic and made from plain old materials, shhet meatl, angle iron, and channel... Good luck with the new job!Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120
Reply:Thanks for all the replys!. One thing we never did in class was overhead gmaw, did a bunch of fcaw but thats it. Should i try running aprox. the same voltage and wire speed as vertical? (around 19v and 180-200 ipm)
Reply:well we arent allowed to change the temp on any of the macines in the shop, they run 800ipm and 28v. Its hard getting used to always pushing the puddle but they are very forgiving about weld apperance, and strength for that matter LOL. I got a bunch of porosity and was told to just weld over the top ( by the boss) and the most important skill is being able to fill in 1/2" gaps in 14 guage. One other thing, they say i MUST use a speedglas and i tried one today and it had horrible headgear, is there anything i can do about this?
Reply:Get new head gear, Ive used 3 different Speedglass hoodies. Great for Fab work, sucked for pipe, gave me headaches stick welding, the design lets in too much arc light. But they where tops for MIG I used to do...Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120
Reply:Would the head gear from one of my passive millers fit? or do i have to buy something specifically for the speedglas?
