Our local scrap yard has a big pile of old sucker rod. I was wondering what the composition of sucker rod is and how well it will weld. I was thinking of getting some for ornamental stuff, like fence and gate pickets.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:They are a alloy steel. They require a low hydrogen process and even then don't always want to hold when under heavy strain like in a cattle pen. Personally if you can get it clean I find that MIG works well for them. I know another welder in town who says the same thing.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:A long time ago when I used to do service welding for drilling companies I ran into sucker rod quite often and I always welded it with 7018.  Its a high carbon hard steel I think.Once you get to working with it you should also find that 7018 is the best rod. (I think)  Good luck man
Reply:My first experience with sucker rod was in the 80's when some one who wanted me to weld a bunch of it back onto a pipe fence. It had been welded with 6011 or 6010 and most of it had just fell out, probably from the contractions and expansions of the pipe fence. I welded it all back in with 7018's and it is still there to this day. I've welded it many times since and always used 7018's with no problems so that is what I would suggest.
Reply:Thanks guys, I'll try both mig and 7018 and see which works best. I saw some very cool window bars made from pieces of sucker rod cut in 1/2 and a piece of flat bar with a twist welded into the middle of each one. They were on some pretty nice homes here which were recently built to look like the old barrio homes.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:Used oilfield sucker rod is ALWAYS magnetized. 7018 is the rod to use and sometimes even that will fail, depending on the individual sucker rod and the load placed on it. I've gotten some that were as hard to weld as drill stem and that stuff is nasty.
