"see topic title"It looks like an "interesting" career to say the least.I've heard from some people that there is plenty of work around, other people say almost nothing is welded underwater anymore. So what are your thoughts on the subject? If it ain't broke, your not tryin'! -Red Green
Reply:I did some welding in the bath tub last night.....Actually from what i hear there is very little under water welding, my sister's kid went to some school for it thinking he would make 1 or 2 hundred thous a year....He dropped out...
Reply:there will always be hyperbaric welding
Reply:Yeah, I'm a Diver/ Welder down here in the Gulf. It's slow right now, but it's a feast or famine type of industry. I've been at it for 11 years, and it's been pretty good to me...
Reply:Have a real good friend whos has been welding pipe for 49 years. He did underwater welding for quite a few years for the company he worked for 35 years. Its not all its cracked up to be according to him. He said there is no glory in it as everyone makes it out to be. He said its a real PITA too.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
Reply:I'm not...yet. Once I'm out of school I will be taking a commercial diving course in conjuction with underwater welding instruction.
Reply:It seems like if you had the means to chase the work you would make good money. But if you don't want to travel then it is probablly feast or famine like the other guy said.
Reply:There is a large bridge job going on here the last few summers, this summer included.Lots of underwater welding happening on this job.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:We don't really "chase" the so much. If you work for one of the companies who actually do the work, they'll keep you busy enough. I worked for a company called Phoenix Int. for 10 years, and now I'm with Oceaneering. I've noticed that there is a lot of misinformation on this site about hyperbaric welding...
Reply:You won't be a underwater welder.. You'll be a commercial diver.. My opinion is to stay out until a storm hits again. Mostly alot of burning now more than welding. I've been out here for almost 2 years now. |
