Tried some new stuff on a recent project, car fab

Well, the summer project car for a friend from out of town is done for now.Here are some pics of the car.1989 s-13 sylviaFIA  4130 chrome-moly roll bar, aluminum DP, charge pipes, some minor seam welding, rear tower brace, and fancy aluminum seat bracket. We are testing the longevity of the aluminum DP, expectations are low. This is a road racing car, so every ounce counts.You know how somw of this racing stuff goes, trial and error.ENJOY....    Very light and stiff seat bracket. As low as possible.  Even my little girl was excited about the project hitting the track...

Reply:Drag racers are using them without hassle, but it didn't like the heat assosciated with 5th gear at 130+mph on 21lbs of boost. Destroyed it. Oh well, wanted to see for myself. It lasted fine on the street.reason for aluminum experiment was cost. I think had it been a larger size, it would have lasted longer at sustained WOT. Titanium costs a fortune, and is very labour intensive to make bends. Next will be 321 stainless with aluminum mid-pipe. It was an experiment.I do lots of aluminum exhausts, even on my car. Melted the dyno hose on my n/a k20 with no ill effects to the exhaust. I still think that the size and incredible vibrations didn't help. It shakes horribly because it has a dampner with stock mounts. Going to fix it over the winter, add some more cage, seam welding,etc.Car was only 3-4 seconds off the pace of the fastest modified corvettes and a lambo, and it was the 2nd time out. More seat time will make a big difference.
Reply:I love metal fabrication and race cars. And I bought my Syncrowave 15 years ago, just so I could say I can weld aluminum. I really like the seat base because: 1, it's complicated and 2, because it's made out of alum and something I could pull off (never will). My question is: how inna heck did that get past tech inspection? The driver's seat base needs to be made out of steel. Those bolts might pull right through the alum with any race induced impact. In my world (me pretending to be the driver), bad place to save two pounds. I have no training, nor a degree in anything. I'm going strictly by 'seat of the pants' engineering. I say repeatedly that I'm just a hobby guy, because I don't want to mislead anyone. And while I'm whining, please keep your pics (good pics BTW) to 800 x 600. Only because; if they're larger, the right edge of your post gets clipped. For instance, all I can see of your location is: Calga...........All of my stuff is 'trial and error'. Why is the steering wheel on the wrong side? Something to do with Calga......?Your daughter is a heart breaker. Does your wife have a sister? Reply:The frame passed tech easily. It is 3/16" thick where the bolts fasten it down, so it's not exactly thin there. You have to remember that the steel in the car where the nuts/studs are is mearly 18 gauge, and so is not overly strong. The one side had to be opened to get the bolt in, and will be closed-up for safety.Sorry about the pics, I see that they are grief.My location is Calgary,AB,Canada.The car is from Japan, imported.My wife has a sister, and she is single. Your assumptions are right on too, they are both attractive ladies to say the least!
