What are the most important/useful school subjects to know as a welder?

Reply:Reading and writing English is important not just in your job but everywhere in life.. because people and employers will judge you by your ability to communicate..  it will either open or close opportunities for you....Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
Reply:interesting priorities.wouldn't you expect to see metallurgy mentioned in there someplace ?
Reply:common sense, math , metallurgy ,and knowing all the basic welding processes ( GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, SMAW). depending on your area for example if you lived around tons of farms then i would try and get to know farm equipment and heavy machinery.

Reply:When I took the 1 year "Welding Techniques" course as a skills upgrade at my local community college, they had a lot of subjects in there which some considered a waste, but which I found very helpful. It not only covered practical and theory courses in stick, mig, tig, oxy-acetylene welding brazing and cutting, plasma cutting and carbon-arc cutting and gouging, but it also taught safety, equipment maintenance, shop practices, differences in gases, electrical as in how the machines work and how to wire them up, weld quality as in defects and how to test for and avoid them, metalurgy, math and geometric drawing for layout, blueprint reading, computer basics and Autocad, English for technical writing and job search skills, and even touched on robotics.I consider that to be a very good couse, particularly for someone new to welding. It was the ground-floor course for someone wanting to move into welding technology and design, welding inspection, and robotics.
