MultiQuip Whisper Weld, model DCI 270SS, 270 Amp DC Welder, 4 KW AC Generator... D850-B, 855cc Kubota engine that was running before HEAD CRACKED due to freezing, not sure if head is repairable, however, I had it "brazed", but not machined.Has one 240V, 20A plug, one 120V, 30A plug, and two 120V, 20A plugs. no leads, no battery. Rocker arm broke, have all other removed parts. Sold AS IS... $350 OBOi was thinking of buying this welder. Does it sound like a good deal? Im a competent mechanic so fixing it wont be a problem. i have looked around on the internet and cant really find anything about this brand. Are they any good? and reliable? and about how much would it be worth running?
Reply:All I have to say is that Kubota tractors and engines are well respected.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. You may pick two.Hobart AC/DC StikMate LXHarbor Freight AD HoodHarbor Freight Industrial Chop SawDeVilbis 20 Gallon, 5 HP Compressor
Reply:Cracked head on the kubotas is a common problem. we got one sittin in the barn with a cracked head that we got for next to nothing. I would get it and fix it. No brainer for me on this one
Reply:What's the ballpark cost on a head and overhaul gasket/seal set? (If I do a small engine, I pull it and inspect it for "CYA" reasons.)
Reply:Ok i just wanted some reassurance before i bought it. A quick search of the parts looks like it will be $800-900 for the parts. Probably could do it cheaper if i look around more.
Reply:If you are looking for a generator that welds, its prob ok, but if you want a welder that is engine driven and also works as a generator then there are lots of better choices for the total cost you are looking at.. I also bet there is more wrong with it than the ad says else he probably would have fixed it himselfTiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:i guess thats the d in the d850-B name..i knew there was somethin botherin me..you say the head cracked due to freezin...isnt this an aircooled engine?now my ignorance is revealed...Last edited by weldbead; 06-08-2011 at 08:20 AM.
Reply:My 1 liter displacement generator is rated for 15KW and burns about 1 gallon per hour. It has taught me to go for the smallest generator that can get the job done. Be careful to get enough muscle to power what you need, but try to not go any larger.Cutting fuel consumption by 40% by going with a smaller engine saves over $150 every 100 hours!I have 3 generators, a 15KW, 13KW and 8KW - if I had it to do over again they would all be diesel - in spite of the extra cost.I love diesel - MUCH safer to store, I don't mind hauling spare fuel around.
