I'm ready to get another welder. Probably just a 110V this time-though I have 220V in the garage, and used to own a Lincoln SP250.I'd rather just use flux core and not have to be lugging big tanks around etc., but I've recently read that flux core needs more juice and will burn through exhaust pipe easier than non flux core. That's going to be most of my welding. Will a flux core only machine be okay?
Reply:From my one time experience welding the exhaust on a Honda Accord with a Weld-Pak 155 using flux core, I'd say yes. It's a 220v machine, but I was only using the middle voltage setting.Welding with flux core requires the opposite polarity tham MIG and does create a hotter arc. You'll probably find that the results will be better if you make shorter beadsThere are no small projects
Reply:The beauty of wire welding gmaw or fcaw is you can adjust voltage and wire speed as well as using smaller or larger wire sizes, and weld various thickness metals with good results. But one thing to consider, if you plan on welding exhaust pipe on late model automoblies some have stainless steel pipes which may want to check to see if fcaw has those capabilities, from my exprience of welding stainless we use a 309L wire with argon / co2 mix dual shield. another item to consider is the fact that fcaw has more splatter and if you are welding items such as roll cages the welds are not as clean and require more effort in preparation of painting and so forth. So either you can tote the bottle and and have quality looking welds or you can use the flux core with acceptable looking welds. Either way they both have theyre place in the industry.
Reply:a 110 fluxcore machine is a wonderful thing when those pesky cracks and holes "showup" in a muffler / tailpipe..just be careful with the heat settings at first......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Well, I'm more like creating the Mother of All Exhaust Systems. I'm still on the fence, though I've found I can rent a 110V flux core machine-or even a 250 series large welder from the same company-though I'd have to rent a vehicle to get the larger one home..Guess that's better than trying to talk friends out of their welder for a day or two-though I'm still shaking the bushes It's just that the odds favor me NOT needing a welder again in the near future. Unless I can pedal this exhaust bit off to others.Or should I just chuck it all and go back to my favorite Pacific Islands to while the day away staring at mountains in the distance..?
Reply:Put a new Muffler on my Son's car couple weeks ago, i used a FLux-core wire with the little mig i have it did well, ran it at 40 amps, got a fair job, at least it didn't leak, and no holes in it, still holding. the little mig is a Farmhand 115 110 volt rig. i think it tops out at 70 amps, but i am pretty sure that would burn holes in the thin exhaust pipes.MikeHH210Hobart Champ 10KLincoln Buzz BoxCampbell Hausfeld 115Victor JourneymanMilwaukee 14" Chop Saw7" Chop Saw4/12" horz band sawmetal benderother toys forthcoming. |
