I have gone back to hardfacing my cable tool well drilling bits with the torch. I have uneven rsults with this-sometimes it won't stick. Do i need a puddle on the bit steel? This goes around the outside edge where there is alot of abrasion, and when i get it , it wears very well. Of course the bit is usually hanging on the machine, meaning a horizontal weld.thanks
Reply:My Dad had A C/T rig when I was very young.Watched him resize bits w/ forge and sledgehammer. Is this still done?Fascinating to watch. I'm assuming you've tried stick welding the hard rod. Have you tried welding "dots" of hardrod instead of beads. I know some types of hardrod are hard to run horizontal. I always had good results w/ Stoody hardrod on heavy eqpt buckets & dozers. Keep the amps down low enough to just form a good puddle. With torch it probably takes a long time to get enough preheat to get rod to stick since there is so much mass to heat. JUst guessing, maybe someone else has a better technique. Reply:Thanks for the tips fellas. Never thought of using acid but that makes sense. I have a friend who forge dresses bits with his dad, then they use the borium gas rodon the lower outside edge where you need it-you keep a flare there so the bit doesn't wear into a wedge shape, cause then you get it stuck! If there is a bead there where you can localize your heat the borium sticks fine just sometimes that wears off before you know it. |
