Reply:is this mild steel, ss, ali or what. what od pipe, leg size on the angle. also, what size and type of rod are you using. oh yeah, one more thing, what amperage are you running and dc-, dc+, ac."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it

Reply:I was running on dc-, I only set this new machine up yesterday to use.   Its a Chinese made machine I actually sell them locally this one was a unit damaged in shipping so I got to keep it and repair it for my own use.Its a plasma cutter/tig/stick welder in one.   I guess I should run it dc+  I was running it at about 100 amps with 1/8 6013.Thanks guys

Reply:[QUOTE]Posted by lotechman[Can't be a Canuck... measurements are in Imperial:'))QUOTE]C'mon, you should know by now that us Canucks are bilingual and can work in both measurements.  Actually if you give Metric a chance its quite good to work with especially when you have to allow for blade widths etc. - no fractions. Here in the Great White NorthMosquitoes can't fly at 40 below
Reply:Newfie_1986 - even with welding on DC- 6013 should have welded it.  running on DC- will just mean it's low penetration and a flatter weld.6013 can be run on DC- or DC+Last edited by Snidley; 09-11-2006 at 10:27 AM.Here in the Great White NorthMosquitoes can't fly at 40 below
Reply:I actually prefer electrode negative with E 6013 but it will run with any variation as mentioned.  Sorry to tease about metric... Indeed we have to be able to switch back and forth.  I do however like to stay on one mode for the job.  I experience an oil company inspector come up and hold up a job for a complete shift.  It was rather embarassing for him.  We were building in metric as per the drawings but he was checking in inches.  It just does not work when you are measuring over 20 metres.
Reply:Well its just that I am having trouble with out of position welding and getting a nice weld.   and well the weld on the pipe did not hold.   I did manage to build a saw mill a while back but everything that was welded together was all the same thickness (the welds were not much to look at though but they have held).I can lay some really nice beads flat but out of position well it goes down hill from there. Thanks
Reply:The 1/8th rod is kinda big for what you are doing, and 100 amps is pretty low current for a 1/8 rod.Try 3/32 rod.
Reply:On the package it said they could be ran at 80 up to 130 amps,   but I guess there is room for adjustment there depending on the machine and operator.I have some 3/32 7018 but it doesnt seem to run well.  I think the 7018 I have has moisture in it !   I can lay a nice rippled bead (on flat welds) with the 7018 but I have to put a lot more effort into keeping the proper distance from the piece im welding so the arc doesnt "blow out and die".Thanks for all the advice guys and keep it comming !im starting to take a liking to welding and I would like to become certified in the future, problem is its 3 years before I can go to school for it.Thanks again !
Reply:out of position you really got to keep your arc tight,, watch your heat if it gets runny you are long arcing, you are moving too slow, or you are just too hot, pay attention to your rod angle as well, point it up a bit when going up. that is good advice to run the 3/32 you will have much more control. watch your arc and keep it on the 3/16 a little more than the 1/8, just work it back and forth but make sure it only touches the 1/8 for a short time
