Reply:That looks like it will work. Do you have one of those floats that auto shut the water off. I have a horse that likes to screw around with the float and has caused an overflow a time or two. good job
Reply:very nice. don't forget to cap the ends, so the wasp wont be able to make their nest inside, then maybe a little paint. good jobHAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Reply:Now for some welds.Went into town today, nursing THE MOTHER OF ALL HANGOVERS, and scored some 3/32 7018.  Had to go to Atwoods because the guy I usually buy from is closed on New Years Day.Never had much luck runnin' uphill on AC.  I was dyin' to see if all I've heard about uphill on DC is true. Some pics are with, and some without flash.  It gives a better idea of the actual profile of the weld.  These welds are the final result of about 7or 8 attempts split between both sides of the piece of plate.  The welds are on the hose keeper thing, so I figured it was a non critical part to practise on.Not particularly sure what I got here.  A stringer, or a weave.  It's some molten metal anyhow.First 2 Pics-  Trying to make a small refined bead.  Wasn't having too good luck with controlNext 2 Pics- Went to a wider bead with better resultsTried to concentrate heat in the sides of the welds with a fast azz pass back over the middle.  The puddle was a bit## to keep track of.  I'm getting real excited about this DC stuff.Anyhow......  3/32 Hobart 7018, 75amps DCEP, 3/8 plate welded to 11ga tubing. Reply:Looks good can't beat the poly tanks they don't rust and if they fill up with ice just flip em over and you have the largest ice cube in the world.
Reply:looks good to me..and by the "scars" you couldn't wait for the weld to cool down before chipping eh?

Reply:Looks good Sam.  You're gonna be a skilled "uphill" welder making them big bucks before long.  You'll find 3/32 the best size to run 1st pass in vertical position, especially when learning.  When you discover the slag running down is not your molten puddle, you'll become even more profecient.
Reply:The girls will like this from eatin all dayLooks great Sam.  I like the key. Very original.  I like to see practical stick in use. weld it like you own it

Reply:Great job and nice welds Sam.  As for that 'new' DC thing, let Clanence know that old dogs can learn new tricks. On that water hose issue, have you given any thought to a 3/4" bulkhead fitting through the side wall and a female swivel GH connector?  Hose could never get away then.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Sam, you need a SHOP. Don't look at the price it will cost you, just think about how many less chipping hammers and tools you will have to replace because you won't loose then in the dirt, and best of all a beer always out of the sun.
Reply:Hey, thanks everybody for the encouragement.  The DC thing is another world. It's only a 2 inch weld, and I don't really know if it's a good one.  It was on tubing, and I couldn't look at the back side.  I have no goddamn idea if the heat was even right.I never had the ability to control the puddle before like the DC allows.  It's all about the puddle now, and then I have to see if the other parts of the weld are worth a damn.  One thing at a timeThe slag is confusing.  I'm trying to see the difference between the actual metal, and the overlay.#$@&^% bunch of guys, yer pushin' me to places that I couldn't imagine before.  THANKS"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:hey sam, how come the thing has outrigger legs on one side only?and am i seeing tig in yer future??

Reply:Not bad at all for your first time.I have always used Lincoln lens in my hood because I could see better than with any other lens made. I don't know if Linclon still offers them or not.Look at the top of your first weld and you can see the undercut around the crater where you stopped. That shows you are getting good penetration into the metal. After you weld with 7018 awhile you will be able to see the flux run out and away from your puddle. I just concentrate on what the puddle is doing and ignore the flux. The only place it had to go is down on a verticle weld. Were you mad at the weld in the last picture? I see you kind of beat it up.
Reply:I'm behind on reading posts and I just saw your solution for your water trough.  I like it but I have a different problem.  We own the shorter version of a similar tank.  We have one horse in particular that keeps sticking his leg in there and pawing at the bottom which bends up the heating element in the winter and he puts holes in the bottom of the tank.  I'm thinking about something similar to yours but raising the trough off the ground about 24".  I would also like to have adjustable ends/legs on it so that it can be leveled.  Nice idea!Miller Dynasty 200DXLincoln SP175Grizzly 14" Band SawRigid CM1450 Chop SawJD2 TN-100 Tube Notcher
