Reply:Awesome Bob!!! I like the extra contact points. Too many top built with only 4 connections to the boat, and too little gusseting. That one looks very sweet! And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Thanks guys, No stainless for me!! It's all sch. 40 anodized aluminum pipe. (Rojodiablo knows all about that stuff) The boats gone now, but on my next job on I'll get some close ups. Rojo, the two mounts on the lower leg brace are covering holes left from the handrail I took off. You can see them in the 1st picture. The lower standoff on the rear leg is a wire chute from the elec. box. I usually try to mount (and thru bolt) two places on the front and two places on the sides of the console. In addition to mounting to the deck.If I knew that I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself

Reply:Freekin awesome! But we want to see the welds. Nice stuff! What a job!David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Rojodiablo, I just happened to think, why don't you just send me a round trip ticket out to sunny (warm) Costa Mesa? I'll pack up my bender and show you how I do it in person. All I need is a place to sleep and eat for free.(I'll buy my own beer) Oh, I'll probably need transportation while I'm there. Got a Harley I can use? I'd be more than happy to help you out. It shouldn't take more than a week or so. And you could write it off on your taxes. If I knew that I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself

Reply:Rojodiablo,Very nice indeed! Looks like a good dive boat setup! (say here is rookie question) how do you prepare the anodized pipe and how do you get it back when finished? Reply:Rojodiablo,I followed and searched the topic and right you are, along with yourself there is one heck of a lot of talent out there and impressive is the work done on Anodized Aluminum. It seems the best protection would be to have the finish welded project powder coated for longevity. Reply:Here are the welds I promised the photo junkies. Sorry about the flash on this one.Rojodiablo, here are some pics of my bender & pump. The bender is from E-Tec Marine and cost $2889.00 The pump is from McMaster-Carr for $ 1367.25. Both were bought in March 2008I notched the left side so I could get bends closer to each other. If I knew that I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself
Reply:Bob,After I posted the comment on powdercoating I thought to myself that (duh) "he probably wouldn't use Anodized material if it was to be painted for protection"I am amazed at what can be done with a tig machine (it is inspiring me to practice and learn all I can in my remaining years! Never to old to learn!TimBob, I have a digital video camera, maybe I can just come on over tomorrow and watch, film and learn? (I am working up the courage to tell the Admiral that it is all necessary for my education) Question: I recall most of the pipe you are using is schedule 40, is there a limit to how thin the material can be when using this technique? If anonizing is essentually a uniform layer of "engineered" oxididation, then can one use this technique to weld "oxidized" bare aluminum in a repair situation where complete pre-cleaning can not be practically accomplished?your welds look as though the "clean area" is purposed to be just slightly larger then the weld bead, (that is impressive)!! Do you use any chemical cleaner on the welded area prior to airbrush painting the welds? When I get "a lot" more competent with my AL welding on cleaned material I will try the technique on Anodized material.Regards,TimA rich man is not the one who has the most but instead one who needs theleast. Reply:Come on down. It's a balmy 22 degrees this morning.I use the same technique when I weld on 1/16", I just turn the amperage down. As far as welding on an oxidized part, It HAS to be clean. If you can get to it to weld, you can get to it to clean it. Whether it be with brass wool or sand paper, you have to have as clean as possible. After I clean with sandpaper or whatever, I give a good cleaning with laquer thinner. It doesn't leave a residue. Mineral spirits or most parts cleaners have an oily residue, making it harder to weld than if you did'nt clean it at all. Can you say "CONTAMINATION?"Before I paint, I wipe down the area with a barely damp cloth(water) to get rid of the white haze around the weld, then wipe with the laquer thinner, then paint. When I was learning, I started by just running beads on a flat plate, no fill rod. Once I got the the beads to look right, I went to running beads with fill rod. Baby steps. And when you start getting frustrated & pissed, STOP---WALK AWAY---and come back to it later. Practice is the key. It's really not as hard as you think it is.BobIf I knew that I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself

Reply:Bob,Thanks for the additional information! Vipernut, Indeed it is time to weld. I am fighting off a stinkin head cold (haven't had even a sniffle in 10+years!) I will be in the shop today as it is calling me to practice. I have been progressing everytime I run a bead either they look better, or at least I can now tell what I am doing wrong.
