I'm wondering what the minimum sheet steel thickness an experienced stick welder can weld on, the techniques they use and the difficulty of doing it. I am interested in stick welding below 1/6" (looking towards 1mm or 0.04").
Reply:I've welded pretty thin with stick before....It works ok if you just do little tacks though. Good luckMiller blue star 2eLincoln 175
Reply:I hope you don't want it to look very good. What are you welding this for, what do you want it to look like? what are your strength requirements?Odds are, you'd be better off with tig or mig.
Reply:Ive done a fair share of 16ga and some 18ga with a stick. Its not much fun but it can be done. But it surely wont look that good.
Reply:I meant to say 1/16" above. Oops. There is no strength constraint, its for a motorcycle exhaust. Only constraint is price. Doesn't matter if its ugly.
Reply:Not meaning to sound pessimistic .... I would say this, if you are going to be welding this type material regularly then perhaps you need to consider buying a Mig or Tig welder.I know there are some people on this site who could weld 1/16" styrofoam together with Stick. However I'll bet they would only use Stick on 1/16" steel if there was no other way to do it. If you are talking about a one time thing then you gotta do what you gotta do as they say.Washman
Reply:hey faex,it is not an impossible task to weld 1 mm sheet material with a 2 mm 6013 stick electrodei am not an experienced weldor, but i have done quite a lot of such domestic jobs pretty successfully without burn-through however, remember, a clean work will help you in the attemptwith some practice you can make pretty aesthetic stick welds with such an electrodegood luckcheapstick |
