This may seem like a strange question, but, are backs strips used much in the US?I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:Use of backing strips depends on code and local preferences. I have used them a lot where the print calls for them. In hollow sections such as structural tubing it makes for a faster and more convenient weld than trying for open roots. I have rolled thousands of backing rings for various sized steel pipe pilings ranging all the way up to 2 metres in diameter. I'm not in the U.S. but have done a lot of work intended for installation below the 49th parallel.
