Had this finished for a few days but today was the first still day we have had since I finished it. I wasn't about to build a fire when the wind was blowing as dry as it is. Here it is with a 12# ham loaded and ready to go.Oreo is checking everything out. man, that cat got dirty rolling around on the charcoal.I decided to add that ring of 24" pipe to hold the charcoal close to the cooker and it doing it's thing.Three hours and two bags of charcoal and here it is. Probe says it is 181 degrees F at the center. It's ready to eat. I've already had a sample--or two and it is good.Last edited by Oldtimer; 01-30-2009 at 09:53 PM.
Reply:Man that looks GOOD!!!!!If I got my act together, it's like a convection cooker. Heat at the bottom, and heat at the top to draw the heat up. Never seen anything like it"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Great, but we need a cross section sketch. Is the meat enclosed or, or, or what. The ham looks so good you got me stuttering.A butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug

Reply:Oreo lit a shuck when I broke out the high tech Victor charcoal lighter. I'm going to take good care of that cat. I had a gopher move into the pasture pretty close to the house a few weeks ago. This morning Oreo came trotting in carrying a gopher. He is going to get canned food for a while instead of that dry stuff Purina makes as a treat for gatching the gopher. If he keeps on catching gophers he may get a straight diet of the canned stuff.Although the cooker does a really good job of cooking but it will probably only get used for special occasions. It is kind of expensive to use. I used match light charcoal so I could just lay it around the cooker and keep it hot. Those two bags cost $22..
Reply:oldtimer..ng on the canned stuff..vet told me its mostly water ..unless you got a real high octane brand..maybe roast the gopher for him to eat?i also learned at zapsters last tig clinic that an oa set and a rosebud will light up cheaper charcoal as good as the matchlight stuff...now with the money you save you can feed oreo ham...
Reply:Thanks for the tip on the canned food. It's too late to roast the gopher. He's already been Oreo's breakfast. I used to use the rosebud to light off mesquite in the grill and it will get things going real quick. My daughter made off with the grill though. I finally made another but don't use it much. The match light is pretty handy. After you light it up the first time all you have to do is put more on as you need it and it is burning almost instantly.

Reply:you need to build one of these. it is a uds and its made out of a food grade drum. it will burn 20 hrs on 10-15lbs of charcoal.

Reply:[quote=fastcat;247931]you need to build one of these. it is a uds and its made out of a OK, for us dummys out here - What is a uds?A butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug
Reply:uds= ugly drum smoker look on www.thesmokering.com and search for uds. i dont have any pics of the inside but i can explain it. you have a charcoal basket in the bottom that you fill with unlit charcoal and then you dump a lit chimney of charcoal on top of the unlit and this is called the minion method. this is how you get the long burn times and with air flow adjustments you can keep the temp at 225 which is perfect for smoking. above that you will have your cooking grate at about 10 to 6 inches from the top. weber kettle grates fit perfectly in the 55 gallon food grade drums. check out that web site and make a uds and you will love it. |
