when i got my grizzly bandsaw it seemed like the vise was good for big things and no good at all for small things. wanting to cut small things, i thought about it and built this.i removed the fixed back end of the vise and made one out of 3/8 plate . wanted the thing to be removable so i built a box thsat would slip over the newrear plate and cantilevered an arm and plate off it.more fotos next post Attached Images
Reply:Looks nice, but I can't figure out what purpose you will use it for.Can you post some pictures with it in work?Roy BDartmouth, Mahttp://www.rvbprecision.comMM 185 MIGDiversion 165Purox W200 O/AGrizzly 9957 MillGrizzly 4030 Metal Band SawGrizzly 1050 Knife Belt SanderJet 1236 Metal LatheCM 14" Metal Band SawTP Blast Cabinet
Reply:the stock vise is good for holding a length of square tubing, no good if you wanna cut a sliver off a 1/4 inch washer.  there was no place to clamp down a small piece. attached fotos show the stock vise, the added platform, and a clamped-down 1/4 rod coupling getting 1/16th taaken off... Reply:Pretty neat.

Reply:farmersamm, youre way over my head:
Reply:Aw, I'm just bein' goofy.  You could make a slice like in your pics with a milling machine set up with a slitting saw.  Preferably a horizontal milling machine, so the piece would drop instead of being shot clear across the shop. But as you get into more weird parts, it may be a good thing to have."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Looks good............But I just drilled and tapped three holes in the flat spot the vise swings onto and I bolt down a piece of "C" channel iron to clamp small parts to for cutting. But your design is interesting............Roy BDartmouth, Mahttp://www.rvbprecision.comMM 185 MIGDiversion 165Purox W200 O/AGrizzly 9957 MillGrizzly 4030 Metal Band SawGrizzly 1050 Knife Belt SanderJet 1236 Metal LatheCM 14" Metal Band SawTP Blast Cabinet
Reply:Took me a minute weldbead but your second set of photos did it for me.  Interesting little set up.  Kinda like sneakin' up on the small pieces from the other side.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:I hope you can still angle your head.  The reason it is recessed on one side is to accomodate making beveled cuts.  If you swing the head won't it cut off your new jaws?Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT

Reply:rbertaloto,  definitely solved the same problem a lot simpler than i did..i admit i thought of that but  didnt want to drill and tap  the saw, and really wanted the excercise i got devising and putting my thing together..

Reply:A new addition to the "Short Piece" situation........I had a small machine vice kicking around. And a piece of 1/2" stock (I used Aluminum, but anything would work.In this case, the "ears" that would normally hold the vise down were milled off as they would be in the way of getting the vise close to the blade. The vise was drilled and tapped to accept bolts from the bottom.......The pictures explain the rest.More Here:http://public.fotki.com/Rbertalotto/machine_tool/Roy BDartmouth, Mahttp://www.rvbprecision.comMM 185 MIGDiversion 165Purox W200 O/AGrizzly 9957 MillGrizzly 4030 Metal Band SawGrizzly 1050 Knife Belt SanderJet 1236 Metal LatheCM 14" Metal Band SawTP Blast Cabinetvery cool..just dont forget its cutting and walk away or it will slice itself off!
Reply:That cool, but with a little bit of ofset you could hold the parts on both sides. Attached ImagesA butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug
Reply:Roy I love it. I was looking at my band saw the other night and my idea was crap compared to yours. It is so simple. "Use the vice to hold the vice"
Reply:mmwhy offset? offset means the two vises are not parallel?wouldnt that make it hard or impossible to hold it in both vises? and why would you want to? (sorry)
Reply:Originally Posted by weldbeadmmwhy offset? offset means the two vises are not parallel?wouldnt that make it hard or impossible to hold it in both vises? and why would you want to? (sorry)
Reply:trying to get it..youre saying offset to make them parallel?
Reply:Forgetting the word "offset".  It means that by lining up the fixed jaw of the machinists vise with the existing fixed(?) jaw on the saw you have a parallel setup.  It provides extra support. But if you have to deal with a piece of stock, or other workpiece that's irregular it might not be too hot.  It only works with uniform pieces. It seems to always be a give and take kind of thing."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:got it . thanks
Reply:roy and i both devised these things as a means of holding small items..i know with the stuff i find myself doing pieces that are often too small and irregular to require or be capable of being held from both sizes..
Reply:And if they line up on the stationary jaw - you can adjust your blade guide rollers ti minum  --  as it shuld be.A butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug

Reply:yessir i can see just what u r sayin..
Reply:to do this roy would need to move the machinist vise forward (maybe an inch?)as youve shown in the foto in #27...his plate would need to become L shaped ..and then once aligned the 2 vises would provide support both sides of the blade..
Reply:I'm not sure what you guys are saying about offset and such. What is wrong with the design? I would like to make one for myself. If you could clarify it might help me.
Reply:mm is saying he would buld it so the vises were lined up to permit both to hold the object being cut at the same time..problem i see is that the saw vise is already holding the plate below the  small vise..the design as roy built it works as long as you dont let the saw down into the aluuminum plate...my design goes under the saw blade..

Reply:Here is the piece of aluminum stock I clamp to the vise to support the free end of the material being cut. Works great!Roy BDartmouth, Mahttp://www.rvbprecision.comMM 185 MIGDiversion 165Purox W200 O/AGrizzly 9957 MillGrizzly 4030 Metal Band SawGrizzly 1050 Knife Belt SanderJet 1236 Metal LatheCM 14" Metal Band SawTP Blast Cabinet
Reply:See That.Great minds do think alike. That's even better than my way.A butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug
Reply:i line up the piece im clamping down with the back  of the box i built that fits over the fixed rear end of the saw vise..does the same thing, stops the cutoff from moving with the blade..by the way that saw blade in the foto is actually cutting while i shot the foto.. Attached Images
Reply:VICE WARSThere isn't one damn perfect best(I'm havin' a FB moment here) way to hold the workAll the designs are good, but there will be the one time it won't work.  Drive ya nutsI was surfin' Ebay one night after doin' a few cans of suds  And I became the proud owner of THIS THING  "Wow" says me... "This baby is xyz adjustable".  I made the final, irrevocable, no goin' back now error..........I hit the bid buttonNow here it sits in all its glory.  I wonder what I bought it for.  I wonder if I'll ever use it.  And I wonder if I'm still playin' with a full deck o' cards  Damn nice paperweight though!!!!!!  Lesson learned:  Stay the hell offa Ebay while yer drinkin' beer!!!!!!!!!!!  And that goes double if you're an idiot like me Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
