I have a job to build an antenna pole, that will be 85' to 90' tall. I was wondering how high you can go before you have to put a light on top of it.
Reply:I think FAA regs say 70 feet or there abouts. Anyway that's where to start, with FAA.
Reply:Thank you. I never thought about looking at FFA regulations.
Reply:Additionally,There probably are permit requirements and architectural sign off requirements, from what I know of it.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT

Reply:hey here is one i know something about.  You will have to check but towers out side of a certian radius of an airport do not have to have a light on top if they are under 200 feet tall. over 200 feet you have to have a light.  i think if the structure is with in 5 miles of airport it will have to have a light if it is under the 200 feet.  i have worked on lots of 50-100 towers and none of them required ligths.  good luck and post some pictures
Reply:twould seem such a structure would require stamped engineered drawings and the engineers should be responsible for inclusion of lights in the design, no?

Reply:Thanks, for all the info guys. I convinced him to get an engineer involved. After seeing his drawings, and saw he only had 5ft in the ground, and I told him I didn't think that was enough, then he got a little cocky, and told me I want you to build it not install it, so I bit my tongue and said I understand and then a few minutes later he said he would consult with an engineer. Told him that would be an excellent idea.  KF6OWC thank you for the info, and this pole is out in the country, about 20 to 30 miles from any airport, but there is a lot of farm land around and I've seen crop dusters flying. I have several pictures to post, but haven't figured it out yet and this is my daughters computer and she has all her FBLA and LSU stuff on and I don't want to hit the wrong button and lose it but will post soon I hope. I'm not that good with computers.:waving

Reply:My father used to fly light planes and I went with him a couple of times he flew out of Andrews AFB. I was amazed at all the small grass strips that were listed on his maps. (He was working on his licence for longer fights or instuments, I can't remember which, but we would fly out to one on these small strips land, then take off and fly to another.) This is in the DC area with several major airports, but I bet there were at least 10-12 small ones, many no more than a clear grass field with a wind sock.
Reply:Having an engineer look at it, save you in the long run.  If I am working on other peoples antenna systems it is nice to see a stamp on the pad supporting the tower, makes you feel better about what you are getting into.  Also the trick that I was taught about tower bases is that you want to dig them in a cone shape, widder at the bottom than at the top. helps keep the thing standing.especiall mono pole type towers, these are usually not guyed and they require a bigger base, than guyed towers. Is this a commercial or ham radio tower?  send pic's when you get going
Reply:This is going to be a commerical tower, and if this one works well he told me he will need three more. Its not much to it, two 4 1/2" drill pipes 30ft tall with a 5' piece between the two 30ft for a space at the bottom and then a  3 1/2" pipe in the middle going up to 85 to 90ft. There will be a hinge at the top of two 30ft poles going through the middle pole so it can be lowered to attach the satellite and then raised without climbing, and will make it easier to service. Thats what he wants so I'm waiting to hear from him or the engineer.
