Going tomorrow to buy a new work truck.. Well it's new to me.. After my 2001 F250 was stolen I have been searching for something older and a little less likley to be stolen truck.. I found this truck on Criags List for 600.00! It's an 1985 Chevy pick 3/4 ton with service bed, best part is the guy has the keys for the tool boxes !!First things to buy for it, alarm, club and large blood thirsty dog to sleep inside it at night!I'm putting the trailer idea aside for now and going to mount my trailblazer in the bed along with my air compressor. So be honest, it's not the best looking truck around but it's for work and it was a steal of a deal at $600.00!! I plan on keeping it locked in the shop and doing some cazy anti-theft stuff to it.. Just need some ideas on exactally what to do to help prevent it from being stolen.Miller 252Miller 250Miller Syncrowave 250Esab Plasma Powercut 1250HF Basic oxy/act torches
Reply:I don't know if there's any way to keep a truck from being stolen.  If they want it, they'll get it.I have one of those old Clubs, and every time I put it on when I go to Tulsa, I feel like an idiot.  If they really want the truck they'll tow the damn thing. There's the standard stuff.  Disable the electrical system with a cut out switch etc....On an older vehicle, I wonder if taking the cap offa the distributor might be good.  Not every thief in the country carries a dist. cap for trucks that have standard ignition."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:That's going to make a really nice rig Jason and a great deal at only $600.00.  It reminds me of my '81 1-ton I had some 12-14 years ago that a fella saw fit to T-bone (his little 4X4 Ranger took the worst of it although both were totalled).  Broke my heart as I spent 3 years putting it together. Reply:Hey Flux!I wish I had that truck!I have a 91 Ford heavy 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive truck that I bought off of a farmer in 1999, it was my daily driver up until last fall, now its sitting in behind my garage, I plan on getting a service bed for it and doing what you plan on doing with that one!Since its paid for, I can't beat the price! With care, that truck should do you well! How about a brake lock, I came up with this one a while back!Up under the dash and just bellow where the brake pedal hooks, run a piece of chain or a bar from the inside of the firewall, push the pedal down and lock it in place, I could come up with a drawing if needed, if nothing else, it will frustrate the hell outa someone trying to steal it when it wont move!Just make sure you have a way of holding the device from getting in the way when you need to use those brakes!Mine, I have a pin and anchor that holds it to the firewall when not in use.and when locked in place to the brake pedal arm, it can't be seen unless you put your head down by the floor boardGood luck with er!Ken.#1. Reply:Wow Jason Nice deal on that truck. I like the rack and service box combo. It will make a great service truck. Up until recently I had a 1986 Chevy 4x4  military truck I used around the shop down here in FL. What a work horse and with a 10 ton winch on the front that could pull down buildings or trees. I got rid of it for more than I paid for it after 6 yrs of use. Some kid made a swamp buggy out of it.Maybe you need this puppy that pawelder said was available with this in the back nothing would come near that truck of course it might cost you over $600 a month to feed it Attached ImagesLast edited by specter; 02-06-2009 at 09:50 AM.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.

Reply:Great find.  You'll enjoy that truck.  Here's a couple of pics of my rig, a 79 Ford F350, had the suspension upgraded to 13,500 GVW.  I carried my Miller AEAD200LE in a rack up front, and my Lincoln SA200 in the bed.  Had a piece of 1/4" plate on the tail gate for a work table.  The "headache rack" rear tube was on a hinge and swung up to be stowed along the left side tube.  This was a nice utility body as it was 9 foot long and had the deep boxes.  I used to do lots of heavy equipment welding, so I need the heavy duty truck for all the tools I carried.  Plus, I offered portable Arc, Mig, and Tig. Ain't nothin' wrong with the older trucks.  Look at it this way.  It has one hell of a feature a new truck doesn't, it's paid for.Good Luck with your truck. Attached Images

Reply:Well that was a fun filled day! I just got home about 1/2 hour ago!.. Let this monring about 8:00 AM PST, took about an hour to cross the international border, you would think that being American we should get a special line to cross, but nope! I was waiting outside in a line that was about a mile long of peole and it was raining! Well I crossed about 9:30am and a buddy of mine picked me up outside. I called the guy to let him know we were going to start making the hour drive up to Escondido to get the truck.. Then he tells me he won't be home till noon, I was like $hit, well it is what it is.. So we spent a few hours in Harbor Freight to kill some time.. I bought a few straps to tie down the 1 3/4" tube steel I was planning on buying while I was up there.. By the way, not sure if here is anyone close to Escondido, CA but Escondido Metal supply sells surplus steel at .50 a pound, not to bad of a price, lot of times the steel is new and rust free.. The stubes I bought were 24' long, 1 3/4" x .120 wall, cost me 26.00 each! A super deal considering normally it runs 58.00 for a 20 footer! These were clean and still had oil on them!Back to the truck.. Got there around 12:45 am PST, looked over the truck gave it a super quick spin, everything seemed good to go, has some oil leaks and the power steering has got a pretty good leak going but all in all for 600.00 it was a super deal.. He did forget to mention that the back window was blown out of it, seat was a little wet but he tossed in a towel to keep my a$$ dry for the ride home.. I stopped at AAA to transfer the tile and plates, that set me back 148.00, not to bad. Then started the drive home and noticed the tank was darn near empty, got off the freeway to fill 'er up.. Put 40.00 in it and the gauge went to full, but the strange thing is that there is something wrong with the filler neck.. I can only pump the gas very slow or it would shut off the pump. I kept trying to turn the nozzel lookin' for the sweet spot but she aint gots one! I'll have to check into that asap, thats a big pain in the A$$. Took me almost 1/2 hour to pump the gas.. He did mention something about putting gas in but it was kinda under his breath.. Stopped over to get my steel after that and then did a little shopping for welder supplies.. Made my way down close to the border and stopped over at the mass string of junk yards to look for a new back window.. Found a place that was just getting ready to close up for day and scored a new tinted rear slider window for 60.00 INSTALLED! Not to bad.. Crossed the border stopped over at my shop to unload all the tube I bought, locked up again and headed over to Starbucks for my evening coffee.. Yes we have a Starbucks here in Mexico.. Thats it really, she ran good all the way home, heater was workin good, it was cold today and raining...  I'm going to pell off the vinal decals tomrrow and take it over to y buddies car wash n the cornner andhave him degrease everything, inside and out! It really needs a good cleaning.. I'll get the fluids changed out tomorrow and look it over reall good.. I get the welder and compressor installed next week sometime..Thanks again or all the support and good comments!JasonMiller 252Miller 250Miller Syncrowave 250Esab Plasma Powercut 1250HF Basic oxy/act torches
Reply:Good deal!!!!!!I wouldn't be surprised if the filler hose behind the inlet thingy is pretty cocked due to the service bed.  That might be why it takes gas slow.  The auxillary tank on my Dodge has a filler hose that is pretty bent, and I have to set the gas pump nozzle on the first notch, and sit and wait.  If I try to fill it too fast it backflows and shuts the nozzle off.WTH, it gives ya quality donut time while yer fillin' the tank"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:I'm willing to be dollars to donuts that you fueling problem is actually a venting problem.   next time you fuel try parking the drivers side (fuel filler side) on a 4x6 and see if that helps.   its worked with some of my older trucks that had bad body installs and shatty filler necks.Other than that you can try and put a vent line on the tank or check and see if the vent that's on their is functioning properlyVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:Yea when I had the flatbed put on my 85 they just extended the filler hoses and didn't account for the fact that there was a smaller tube inside the bigger filler neck.  well when they extended them they only did the big tube. when you put fuel in I would gargle back and puke fuel at you.   REALLY FUN Getting douched with fuel on you way to a welding job.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:My '86 had same problem filling because of the way the service bed was installed on the truck putting a  bend in the filler pipe and vent.  I used the old one as a pattern and made myself a new filler&vent  out of larger pipe. That truck because of it being diesel had duel tanks. The new pipes allowed me  to use the faster fueling truck stop pumps.Glad to see that you made in back in one piece.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.

Reply:Farmersamm:Good idea but a little easier one is a trick they used during the war in England. Open the distributor, remove the rotor and pop it into your pocket. Quick, simple and you're right not many thieves carry distributor parts around with them. And even if they look under the hood it isn't immediately obvious that the rotor is gone or why it won't start.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...

Reply:Nice work truck, I like the utility bed, and yes, you got a GREAT deal on it.   That musta been some ride home in that pouring rain we had all day yesterday with no back window!  Even cheaper than Escondido Metal Supply is DUCO, down the street at Simpson and Andreason.  They always have a good selection of used pipe in nice condition there. On my old Chevy, I used to disconnect the power plug to the HEI coil and chain and padlock the hood.   With no chance of ever getting spark, the only way to steal it then would be to tow it away.  The benefit is the theif could crank and crank on the starter all he wants, thinking it will start and it never will, which might give you time to hear the racket and get out there and beat the carp outta him while he's sittin in the truck. On my old GMC, I upgraded the chain to a fifth wheel kingpin lock, the kind that looks like a big u-bolt that goes around kingpin.  I looped that through the holes in the hood bracing at front of hood and made two holes in the radiator core support for the legs of the u-bolt to protrude through.  I chopped out a square in the grill for hand access and that is how I got the locking bar on the ends of the u-bolt thing.  There was no room for bolt cutters to access it from outside so the theif would have to bring a cordless sawzall with a long blade on it and even then access would be very tight.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:DesertRider,I thought you were some where is SoCal with a username like that!! I have never heard of DUCO before,, Do you have an exact address for them and a phone number. Do they have plate there also.. Plate is getting way to high priced these days, even used plate is costly! Plate here in Mexico is high priced also.. There is one guy here with a scrap yard and has a $hit ton of plate, real nice stuff.. But he wants more that new for it, claims its from the USA and had to pay to import it.. My biggest problem here is that they see your American and automatically assume you got more money then brains!Yeah it sucked bad on the 15 all the way back towards the border! But I scored a great deal on the new back window!I like the idea of chaining the hood! That is going to get done for sure!! I don't plan on mounting or storing anything in the truck until I know it is pertty darn secure! My buddy has the truck now cleaning up, man that thing was super dirty!! Freakin diesel mechanics, 100% pigs! I know it's a work truck but come on, there is a limit somewhere..Next time I'm going up to SD I'll let you know so maybe we can meet up for lunch and check out each others machines.JasonLast edited by FluxThis; 02-07-2009 at 06:39 PM.Miller 252Miller 250Miller Syncrowave 250Esab Plasma Powercut 1250HF Basic oxy/act torches

Reply:Jason, DUCO is right on the north east corner of Simpson and Andreason.  From Harbor Freight, go east on Mission to Andreason, turn right (south), go to the stop sign (Simpson) and turn left.  Can't miss it.  They sell new and used there, all shapes.  I go there for the low priced used pipe and good prices on new grinding and cut-off wheels.  Their used stuff is usually in better shape than Escondido's.  Escondido does have a bigger selection of new stuff in-stock than DUCO.DUCO- 1342 Simpson Way, Escondido, 760-747-1266, open 7am - 3:30pm.Another one to check out is Lee's Iron and Metal, in Vista, south west of Oceanside Blvd and Melrose on Lee.  You'll need to look at a map and find Lee street cause I don't remember the names of the other  connecting streets to get there, just know where to turn when I see them.Lee's Iron & Metal, Vista, 760-941-2814.  They do both sales and recycling there.Msg me if you're comming up to n.county some time.  Good luck with the 'new' truck!  -Glen.Last edited by DesertRider33; 02-08-2009 at 01:33 PM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
