what beginner welder? millermatic 135?

Hi guys,I'm looking at getting into welding so that ld get I can do simple repair work and fabrication.  Nothing too heavy duty at all - I mostly want to learn and be able to tack some stuff onto a trailer and make some racks for storing tools and parts for my dunebuggy.I live in a rented duplex, so unfortunately I have to stay 110volt only.  I've been told by a friend (that doesn't weld professionally) that if I want to do this, I should get the Millermatic 135. Is this good advice?  Is this overkill?  It seems like an expensive machine, but if it really is worth it, I'd rather spend the money than be mad that I cheaped out.thanks,Joe

Reply:I'll second that.  I have a MM135, love it.  Bigger would be better, but portability is was I was after.
Reply:i have hed the MM135 for over 5 years and its still running like new. get a good 12/2 extention cord for it and you will be fine. yes its a bit more $$ but i felt it was werth it, its built solid to last, i would rather buy 1 good tool than several bad or cheap ones. if you have the $$ go for it. if $$ is realy tight you can get a reconditioned HH140 for about 1/2 the going rate of the new MM135 or MM140 now. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:extension cords really make a bad effect on 110volt mig machines. the mm135 is best in its class because of duty cycle and infinate voltage control. the voltage control is nice because you know approximately where to set any other machine for the same materials. i would stay away from many extension cords though. enjoy it
