My shop is a 2 car garage and space is a constant concern, especially since I keep 2 cars parked in it. Here's some pics of a grinder stand I built to free up some bench top.

Reply:As I scrolled down I wondered why would anybody mount a grinder on a car, a vette at that.nice work.  I have receiver on my tables.
Reply:Call it a grinder tree ..Neat idea.
Reply:Neat idea, of course I wouldn't have thought of it either. - John

Reply:Thanks, I have a small drill press that I plan to make a base for too (clear off a little more bench top). My main bench has 2" square legs and 1/4" plate top, I'm thinking I will cut a hole directly over a leg and use it as a receiver. It would be handy to have the added versatility.
Reply:I agree that locking wheels would be nice, used what I had kicking around. I've gotten into the habit of putting one foot on the front leg of the stand to keep it from rolling around. There is a foam pad on a lot of my floor that dampens the rolling too.
Reply:maybe you could make a frame that comes off the table and locks onto the stand?   That way if you need to lock it in place for really hard grinding you can but you can quickly unlock it to move it around.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Great idea Sn0border88! I'm gonna put some thought into that.

Reply:Homemade and handy.  Good idea.WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
Reply:I did something similar for the vise, except it doesn't move. Set 18" of 2 1/2" seamless sq tube in the floor before I poured it. Have a piece of 2" to set inside it and a short piece of 2 1/2" mounted on vise base to set over 2". The vise will not move no matter how hard you pull and it's out of the way when not needed.   I,too, work in a 2 car garage so I'm always trying to utilize floor space to the max.                        MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Sweet garage. Did you ever finish that eagle, or did I just miss the post?
Reply:The eagle is still a work in progress. I have the feathers complete on one wing and over half way on the second. As you can imagine, I get distracted by other projects. Here's the eagle link, I'll update soon.http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=6957
Reply:I took the grinder idea one step further and cut a hole in the 1/4" plate on the top of my bench. The grinders slip into the bench leg and can be locked down with the nut/bolt. The piece in the pic is to cover the hole so all my screwdrivers and vise grips don't fall in. The bench is over 11' long, 1/4" plate top and 2" square legs....weights a ton. Makes for a pretty solid set up.
Reply:Cool idea on the stand! Hope you don't mind if I borrow the concept.I'm shop challenged as well and all the big tools are on casters to roll back and forth to their hidey holes. Altho I got to admit, I only park one car (read: it's being worked on..) in my two car garage. What's the black car. Looks pretty interesting.
Reply:Thanks Azlar, feel free to use the idea. As long as you post a pic of your version. The black car is my 1976 Datsun 280Z, I've been working on it for 10+ years (ton of mods and performance upgrades). Here's a pic:
Reply:Great idea. I did something similar by using an electromagnetic door lock with 2500 pound pull to hold the tools on. I have one stand and exchange the tools but I did not make the storage for them on the same stand like yours. It is great to flip a switch, change tools and flip the switch again. I can grab my grinder and pick up the entire stand by picking up the grinder.I have vices, grinders, a small welding table, an acid etching station, a buffer and an overhead projector that all mount on the same stand. The overhead projector is for blowing up drawings to life size when planning projects.Congrats on a smart solution to your problem, it will help others as well.
Reply:Just noticed something else. I tend to look at the background of pictures for the ideas that are not necessarily the topic of the photo. I noticed your screw driver storage on the wall. I took some 1-1/2" angle iron and drilled holes in it every 3/4" and mounted it on the wall. I can put my screwdrivers in the holes and see what they are easily. One for flats, one for phillips and one for tiny ones. You can put it fairly high on the wall and it is out of the way and no more searching to find the right one.Great stand for multiple tools.  Imitation is one of the greatest forms of flattery and I'm going to make one like it.  Thanks for the great idea and great pix.  I'm in the process of building a stand for my bandsaw right now and need one for my grinder and sander also.Bob from Idaho
Reply:looks nice, do you use the grinder while it's on the cart? or is it just for storage? I just don't know about getting the grinder filings into the buffing wheels."Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal"   -Henry Ford
Reply:I use it mostly for storage and work with the grinders in the bench holder. Good eye Eyeball Engineer, I had a buffing wheel start smoldering once from grinder sparks, it should have a cover of remove the buffer before grinding. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:I've lost a patch, or two, of skin on those wire wheels.  I stay away from 'em now"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I caught a piece of one in the eye once, Dr had to freeze my eyeball to scrap out the rust with the tip of a needle.....not a good experience. That was 20 years ago, one of those moments that convinced me to wear safety glasses ALL the time.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
