This may sound like a dumb question, but what is the best way to make a tig holder when the welder you have requires scratch start and always has at least 5 amps running through it.  Obviously a normal metal holder would take the chance of arcing everytime i put the torch down.  Maybe there is just something wrong with my welder?  Is this normal?  Anybody have any solutions? My Babies:MillerMatic 185Thermal Arc 300SHobart StickMate AC/DC 235/160Dalex Werke Spot WelderOh and the wife and kids are important too!
Reply:I've been thinking about making one of these for a while: http://www.htpweld.com/products/tig_...orchholder.htmWe have some beat up ones that clamp to the side of your table.. Not sure if any of them are still alive.  Not sure about your problem with it running all the time.. dosnt that get a little expencive on the gas?Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:The gas doesn't run all the time, just the current.  I'm assuming it is because it has to have some current running through it at all times so that you can do your scratch start since the pedal doesn't turn the current on and off, just controls the amps.  i don't have a high frequency start on my machine. My Babies:MillerMatic 185Thermal Arc 300SHobart StickMate AC/DC 235/160Dalex Werke Spot WelderOh and the wife and kids are important too!
Reply:I always just used a little U shaped piece welded to a base.  Think of those really cheap soldering iron stands that just prop the tip up.
Reply:make it out of wood and rubber..........
