I made some shelves to hold my very heavy old book collection.  I wanted to get rid of the standard book case in my living room so i needed to move the books.  I like having things off the floor so i made shelves that fit in the corner and attach to the wall.  I made them out of 1"x1" square tube and some flat pieces.  The large area of the shelf is MDF and is recessed behind the 1"x1" tube.  They are 4 different lengths (39", 35", 31" and 27") with the longest one closest to the cieling.  Looks like the shelves are growing out of the cieling.www.dynamitedave.com

Reply:Great idea!  Real nice! Did you put some sort of stop bar at the back so the books in the middle don't get pushed too far back and fall off into the void?-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:I like the clean look, no angular members to help support the shelf. Nice use of a normally unused portion of the home. Good thinking and well made.
Reply:Very cool indeed.  I made some similar to that years ago, only out of wood.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:That's a good idea to conserve space.  They look good man.I'd be a lil' embarrassed to be showin' the S/M, Bondage thingy ya got there"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Now where are the close-up pics of the welds?  And I can see the shiny screw heads in the pics.  It distracts a bit from the clean plain black look of the shelves by attracting attention to themseves.  Maybe use some black-oxide hardware instead of shiny plain zinc?  Or put a dab of black paint on the screws.  IMHO.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:My Grandpa had one on of them machines.  He would break the spring and it would need welding every yearCarlohttp://public.fotki.com/Naudi2U/
Reply:Take a look at the motor on that thing.  I think we're lookin' at a damn near bona fide antique.  Same with the seat, and the general construction.I might be wrong, but I just might bet the farm that the nameplate on that motor says MADE IN USA."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Thanks guys.  No upclose weld pics from me.  I use a non gas mig and they are not the pretty tig beads you guys do.The bondage machine is actually an Exercycle from around 1962.  It's mostly living room art but it works.  It's super heavy and the motor is a Westinghouse.  Here is a video of one just like mine www.dynamitedave.com
