hello, im trying to teach myself some tig welding. been @ it about 12+hrs now & I think im getting the hang of this? (steel) seems my biggest troubles is heat control, filler feeding, consistency in walking my puddle & torch angle? please any1 can look over my welds here & tell my whats bad/good if n e? im using a miller diversion165, 1/16 rod, amps 95, metal 3/16. please all the help the better, thanks! much appreciated. Reply:try some end welds with no filler and consentrate just on movement,Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:clean off the  mill scale tig  likes  it  clean clean agreed learn to control puddle, then add filler maybe turn up the amps a bit it's all hood time practice practice and some more some of the bead was too fast  once you touch the tung stop and regrindidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441
Reply:Your too cold, dont be affraid of it. You need to try to burn a hole in it, just take a pc and slowly bring it up to temp and see how hot it has to be to burn a hole it, that will help you find your peramiters, the proper temp will be somewhere between where you are and burn thru temp. It will also help if you grind the plates before you weld them that will give you more consistant arc performance and heat control.
Reply:thanks, will put it all to use!
Reply:Some very good advice here. One of the nice things about tig welding is that you don't haft to add filler wire to actually weld.  Adding filler wire is actually an option in this process. This is a good training idea.Clean off the steel with a grinder or sander so it's bare shiny metal and using only the torch - run some beads on the plate without adding filler wire.Learn how to walk the cup along the plate while making neat consistent looking ripples.  That is very good practice and you will learn a lot I guarantee.Touch the back edge of the cup to the plate and using a somewhat twisting back and forth motion learn how to walk the cup up along the plate making neat ripples.  With a large cup size you can make wider ripples because of the surface area of the cup is greater allowing for more movement of the tip in the walk.  With a smaller cup size you can make narrower ripples.  Of course there is a lot more to it than just that but if you can learn how to "walk the cup" you'll be well along your way to learning how to make more difficult welds.Good luck manLast edited by slowhand; 07-14-2011 at 10:05 PM.
Reply:The best advice I can give is look thought the forums "General Welding Questions" and "MIG, TIG, Stick, And Oxy/Fuel Welding" (Yes all 606 pages of threads) and read all the different threads about TIG. There all ready a ton of good info in this forum if you look around. You can find lots of good weld pictures and people explaining exactly how they did it. I'm sure he will show up in this thread soon, but look for posts by Zapster (Zap). He is the man when it comes to TIG.kidtigger24  They think I’m crazy, but I know better. It is not I who am crazy. Reply:walking the cup  is ok but learn to just move the torch (keeping the gap even an at the proper angleyou can't allways rest the cup on somethingidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441

Reply:All appreciated! The site is great I've went through pages! When the term "toes tied in" excuse my ignorance but is this the void looks in between each pool I'm seeing? Thanks all!
Reply:The "toe" of the weld is where the weld meets the plate. Yes those "voids" are what I'm talking about.  In most cases the puddle didn't fill enough ( not enough filler added), the heat was too low (humped look to some areas), you pulled the arc away before the puddle caught up with the arc (if you were doing a motion), or you moved forward too fast.If you had too much heat the toe would show signs of undercutting, usually on the vertical plate. Thats where you melted the base metal, and either didn't fill it in, or it slumped down leaving an undercut "ledge". I don't see any sign of that here at all..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Dsw thanks for taken the time to explain. I just reduced heat here on this lesson b/c it seems I was burning in the vertical plane on previous sit downs I've done which I thought for a sec my tungsten was too sharp?   I do have a tig calc also so will ref towards that b4 I get started.
Reply:If your heat is roughly right and you still have undercutting, it probably means you aren't adding enough filler, or that you are not waiting for the bead to catch up to the arc..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Prop doc hit it..Your biggest problem is that it's just not clean enough..Grind it down to shiney metal and try again..More amps!!Go to around 200 and use the pedal to adjust  heat accordingly..There is no such thing as "Tungsten too sharp either"..You have the basics.... Now for the fine tuning......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:will do, thanks all. enjoy the weekend!
