This is more like a perky 21 yr old.  Got fed up with the junk paper towel holders out there, so it was time to make a few, ok ten of them to be exact.  Started out with 1&1/2" tubing, cut and polished it up. Found some 1 in nuts unfortunately some were 8 TPI other 14 TPI, no biggie, just cut about 6" of each thread on the lathe and set up a press fit into a bushing. The threaded pieces are TIG welded to the bushing then the bushing lightly pressed and locked in with Locktite Bearing Locker No. 609. Making the base holes are just for looks, no function, big one is cut on the lathe

Reply:Overkill?  I don't think so, not with all those tacks holding em together.  It's gonna fail once you get enough towels on/off it.Seriously though, great idea & execution.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:i like it i may even build on or two if i get some more scraps in
Reply:Do nothing by 1/2's, that you can do by 4/2's.Motion activated, motor dispensed, automated cutter....what else?A man who can't weld is as poorly educated as a woman who can't sew
Reply:Next time I'll use Timkin ceramic roller bearings with a three phase motor to dispense them. Thanks for the kind words and suggestions they have been forwarded to the "engineering department"

Reply:im goin back into the 60's to  recollect an acid dealer in a red cape  and long pointy hat up in quebec...i remember him smiling  and saying"never do a half..."i think hes yer kindred spirit...nice dessign..
Reply:Dude, you went to the time and trouble to mill out some plates and also to offset bore a big hole in said plates using a four-jaw chuck and a big lathe ("just for looks"), and cut-n-polished the 1.5" tube, and TIG welded bushings and threaded adapters together, ...and then you just put a couple of small tack welds on the thing????Come on man, after all the overkill on everything else, why did you just tack weld it together?  Go big or go home.  You need to go back and full-pen weld the pieces together.    The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Should you not have a wrench hanging there to change out empty rolls?A butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug
Reply:They look really nice...........I did notice that you used some slotted screws to mount one of them onto that red cabinet.  I don't know about you, but nobody that I know still uses those.  They can be a nightmare to get installed sometimes.  Just getting rid of some laying around?Welding HacLincoln Electric 3200HD

Reply:Ok I'm a *****, I tacked the back in three places and ground it flush.  I was going to TIG weld them but wanted to get them finished for a trip on Friday (Going to Daytona Beach for Bike Week, my brother is racing in a vintage class) and I'm taking a few for the boys.  So anyway.... I cheesed out, yes, and went for the quick MIG I also didn't want these babies looking like a pretzel from the heat.  Besides they have a special Oklahoma Warranty  if it breaks you get to keep both pieces.  As for the slotted screws....I have no less than 50,000 bolts and screws, junk to grade 8, metric and standard, as small as no. 4 to as large as 1&1/2".  I wanted to use stainless allen 1/4-20, but you know the story...always that one size that seems to be missing.  I do have several hundred of those slotted jobs.

Reply:Sounds like someone else besides me got excited when they saw that clearance table at the hardware store full of boxes of bolts, nuts, screws and ?And here I thought I was the only one that thought "Clearance" meant, clear the table off if your going to buy! Nice Rack!My wife could use one of those in her kitchen, I get tired of replacing those old cheap plastic ones that only last about 2 months before they break!Last edited by Ken Dennis; 02-25-2009 at 10:00 AM.#1.
