i have a project that i need to put a 10* bend in a length of 1 3/8 4130 think i can pull this off without crimping the tube. i don't have a bender so i was just going to go for it. i can heat it if you think that would improve my chances.
Reply:Heating your 4130 would improve your chances of bending it, but it may also ruin the mechanical properties (strength, toughness) of the steel.  Do some more research before you commit to using heat to have your way with the metal.  There are some tricks like filling the tube with sand and capping the ends that my help you prevent buckling when you make the bend.  Do some searches on this forum for examples of other tricks.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:Where you located? You might have someone nearby that could bend that for you.

Reply:tube wall is .035. i thought about the sand and cap routine. im not sure what the strength of the tube will be after heating it but if it is half of what it was when it started i will be fine. i used to work for the only shop in Bend that had a mandrel binder and i know they don't have dies for tube this thin. radius is pretty flexible though.
Reply:If half the tensile strength is fine, why use 4130?  It's rediculously expensive unless you must have that strength to weight ratio. For half the strength you could switch to a slightly thicker wall mild steel tube, which you could heat to bend, and wind up at the same place...Sorry if this seems argumentative, but something doesn't add up here.  Either you're making unnecessary work for yourself, or you've left out some important facts in the problem you're trying to solve...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:the tube needs to be 4130 strong in one spot but from the bend to the end of the tube it will see much less load.
Reply:Ok I am no expert, but tubing die chart list minimum thickness for 5.5"r is .058. If you need this thin wall tubing I would look to see if somone in your area can do a mandrell bend for you."If you live in Sacramento you have seen my work."
