I was reading a 'how to' book on Tig

and its got this chapter about AWS certification tests...It has some samples of the project drawings.  Im curious as to how this is done.Do you need to provide your own equipment?  When it says to do a 1/8" weld, is it stating 1/8" from the root of the weld? Reply:I gather you are asking how to become "AWS Certified".The way I understand it, there are several various welding codes, depending on the industry, AWS D1.1 Structural Steel, API 1104 Petroleum Pipe, ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel, Military, etc., which each have their own welder qualification requirements which are specific to the material, process, joint, position, etc.So, generally, your employer will have you tested and qualified for the particular work which they need, as specified by the customer.If you are an independent welder, and certain certs are required for you to do specific welding for a customer, I guess you would need to go to some independent testing facility to secure the documentation to prove you passed the particular requirements of what ever code that is being required by the customer.
Reply:Thanks pulser.  I just didnt understand what it was all about.  I see now that the tests could be employer specific/job specific.  I have one book that shows aircraft pipe certification and another that just shows sheet metal type tests.  Its all in what you need it for.That was a pretty dagone broad question eh?
