I finally made it out of the companies welding school and into the shop only to find that I have to learn everything all over again now that I have left an ideal environment.  Some of the things that are frustrating are working with hangars of all shapes and angles, ventilation conduits larger than Charlie Browns pumpkin, poor fit ups, metal cabinet frames just small enough to make you into a contortionist just to get your head and both arms into to weld up a joint, welding symbols and welding spec codes both of which I don't know much of as there was no class on either. These are just a few of my frustrations right now and trust me there's more but despite the fact that I get so angry I want to walk out I still like welding.Welding Supervisor Department of Corrections.

Reply:I'm gonna give you the best advice I ever got- sell it all, move to Mexico, and open a bar on te beachGo Cards!!!!!
Reply:It does only get worse, but you do become accustomed to it. Once you've seen all the crap once, the second go around isn't as bad. You may even find that you enjoy a particularly PITA type of job. Once you find that out you set yourself up as a niche welder and charge 10x as much for it.

Reply:Way back when it was my day to be you I worked for what I now know was a pretty good old boy (he's since passed away).  He told me, "when you're feeling like walking away and quitting just drop your lead and walk up to that old metal gate - and don't come back until you're ready to give it another try".  (or something like that) lolWell, I make many a trip up the lane behind that old welding shop to that metal gate.  I've kicked that gate, I've hit it, etc, but I didn't quit and give up.  I learned what I needed to learn to do that job, then I moved on to bigger and better things.  Yea.  Make this you hobby for awhile and learn it.  Read about it,  study about it, think about it 24-7 for awhile, then go and do it every day for awhile and learn it.  And at some point in time you'll get it and you'll understand it and what everyone has said to you about welding and why they said what they did to you.Go find that old metal gate to kick-on instead of quitting your job and going home like you feel now.  You will understand all this someday I promise. lol  It will get better - - - if you want it to and if you are willing to work toward that level of skill. Then what?  Take it up another notch!!!!!  Do what I just said - and at that point in time you'll be able to do so. Good luck manLast edited by slowhand; 07-20-2011 at 08:46 PM.

Reply:I can't study the symbols or the codes as they are changed on a regular basis and are government code and symbols which I am not at liberty to take off site.Welding Supervisor Department of Corrections.
Reply:Lemme see Big 65... weren't you trading the big mopar for a smaller version a while back??? I hope that is going well.Very good advice above from folks with SALT! The little teacher in your head is just getting ready to work, you will struggle, you will adapt, you will advance, you may even change trades or occupation.Know this... NOTHING worthwhile is easy, NOTHING is completely documented in text and instruction, NOTHING will work until the teacher in your head sees it. And NOBODY can really prepare you for the next task!!!!Everything is easier after knowing that. You add tools to the toolbox a bit at a time (the toolbox never gets full).I think you may have salt... pre-salt... The most beautiful words I have ever heard was another old hand say "I've seen a lot in the trade, you don't have to take a back seat to any I can remember". That was in 1983 & my head is still trying to shrink back to normal. You never forget the tap by a tradesman...Good luckMatt

Reply:Any rules against taking digital pictures of the info you need to study ?Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.

I work on a multi billion dollar project where the client is the Gubment, and we follow the standard welding codes and procedures.  If there are exceptions they are written/approved by the engineers, and submitted through a lengthy procss of approval to the client if need be...And I'm not saying break company policy....But, unless they want you spending all day studying diagrams, and symbols etc...  instead of learning your craft...I'd find a way to study
