Hi all,Newbie here. I'm itching for a project and wanted some ideas and feedback for a lamb/pig spit.  Anybody built somehting like this? The image above is from a google search.Has anybody built somehting like this? I've see some people use a 55 gal drum. No idea where to get those.Any idea what kind of motor to use? I was wondering if a car starer could be slowed down and used? Thanks in advance...

Reply:You can get new drums from MSC and probably Graingers and Mcmaster Carr. I just looked in my MSC catalogue and the list steel and SS drums new from 10 gal to 55 gal. Sit down before you read the prices on a SS 55gal drum. ( I should have nabbed the SS one I saw on CL a couple of weeks ago, they were selling it for pennies on the dollar!)275 gal home heating oil tanks work well also. I have seen several done out of those. I could buy one of these cheaper than the SS drum.I would caution you against using used drums, unless you are sure whatever was in them is safe to cut and cook in. Some times you can find places that get cooking oil in drums. Those are fine. I can lay my hands on dozens of used 30 gal  and 55 gal drums, but they all had toxic chemicals in them and not worth the hassle. As far as the rotisserie unit, can't help you there. I did have a unit that came with my large toaster oven, but I pitched it because I never used it and got tired of tripping over it when it fell out of the cabinet. keep you eye out at thrift stores and on trash day and you might get lucky.

Reply:WOW I love it.Keep em coming guys!!!Kam, can you tell me anything about the pulleys and electric motor? I take it the pipeline pipe is not easy to come by.DSW you weren't kidding on that price. And it's EMPTY!!!! I was thinking of getting an unknown drum, putting a gallon of gas and burning everything out out of it. Sounds like it's not recommended.SoArk. Yeah that's a great start  What was it before it turned into a grill? Torpedo?  Where do you even find something like that?

Reply:Ok I found a few links you might like.http://microzone.us/weldingforum/ind...opic,35.0.htmlhttp://www.shareaproject.com/pages/p...,p,444,00.htmlhttp://www.bbq-4-u.com/forum/http://microzone.us/weldingforum/ind...ic,1659.0.htmlhttp://microzone.us/weldingforum/ind...pic,184.0.htmlThe BBq forum has a bunch, search there. I have some other links somewhere to several other BBQ forums that guys have posted links to inthe past, I just can't find where I saved them right now.The thread on Mzone on tank cutting and used tanks seemed apropriate. Some of these are smokers and some grills, not sure exactly how you plan to cook so I included a bit of each.Hope some of these help.I think Soark's was a propane tank in a past life.Last edited by DSW; 03-07-2009 at 12:17 AM.
Reply:I built this one last year but have not used it yet. The drive is a 2 rpm gear motor from Surplus Center. The basket was made with SS 5/8" tube. Attached Images
Reply:triptester, nice looking grill. You might think about a cover of some sort for that motor. It doesn't look like it's rated for outdoor use, and I'd hate to see it get ruined just by sitting out in the rain exposed. Some sort of "roof" should take care of that if its not for exterior use.
Reply:It was an old Butane tank that used to be buried. I have another that I dug up with my tractor that is almost twice that size.I am going to add a firebox onto that one. It cooks good but I want a low and slow cooker. But it will still double as a big ole grill. Here is a picture of them both.......South Arkansas RebelMiller 210 W/ Spoolgun& dual tank rackMiller Thunderbolt AC/DC

Reply:I believe after the reduction it turns around 6 rpm . It was just trial and error with the parts scrouched up with out buying any thing. I have looked at some nice ruduction gear boxes on ebay such as http://cgi.ebay.com/Browning-Model-E...3A1%7C294%3A50Miller Big 40Lincoln SP 125Millermatic 180Century 20/50 plasmaHe who dieswith the most toys ...Still DiesThere is room for all Gods creatures .......... Reply:Thanks for the wonderful ideas.DSW, I'm folowing up on your links.triptester, that's an awesome grill. Is that 1/8" plate? my neighbor gave me a couple of sheets of 16 gauge, I wonder if that would work? Surplus Center has a ton of motors, what model was yours?soarkrebel, WOW those are impressive. I don't think I'll be able to find someting like that though. too bad.kamhillbilly, Nice find on ebay. might be easier & cheaper to find a motor that works in the right range though...Specter... not exaclty a hawaillan bbq, more like Greek Easter (Pasha)
Reply:The end plate are 3/16" and the rest is 14 gauge. I got the motor from Surplus Center  for $89.00 but I checked and they don't have any left. The motor is a Dayton 2 rpm, totally enclosed, fan cooled, cont. duty.  Model # 3M125The roaster is an attachment to an existing grill. I picked up the original Belson grill on the side of the road the owner was junking it. Attached ImagesLast edited by triptester; 03-09-2009 at 03:23 PM.Reason: Add info
