I know there has been some discussion of the various generator and clean vs dirty power output.  I am looking for recommendations of brands of generator to buy for running my Powcon welders.   Looking for 7500-10K watt output.  Also if you want to share brands to definitely avoid that would be fine too...I am hoping to find something used so would like to know a variety of brands to look at.   Wondering if I should take my automotive lab scope with me and look at the actual sine waveform if I would be able to see differences between the good and bad generators in the quality of power they put out.    ThanksDJLast edited by soutthpaw; 07-25-2011 at 01:40 AM.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:I have been told that newer honda gensets usually produce very clean power.  Even a tighter variance than what comes out of your wall.  Most generators have an indication in the manual to indicate if it is a "non sinusoidal" wave, or a percentage of variance from sine.  With that being said, I know of several people who run inverter stick welders off of cheaper generators like the ones from NT.  The scope is a good idea though because in my experience you will get a lot of glassy eyed "deer in headlights" looks if you ask a salesperson about output wave variance or wave pattern.  You can also expect to encounter some reluctance to let you hook it up and check in store.  Cash in hand works wonders to overcome that kind of problem, however.
Reply:I was under the impression that an inverter could handle dirtier power because the circuitry filters it better than a transformer scheme.  The specs indicate a very stable output from input ranging from 205v - 240v.I have an Onan 8k/13.5k surge genset I use regularly to power my  elders, a Lincoln tombstone AC/DC, 3-in-1 import TIG/stick/plasma, and a HH187.  The Lincoln occasionally kicks the generator offline if the rod sticks while striking an arc but the others work fine.  I also have a Hobart 10k Champion but haven't tried running the other welder off it.Steve in Central TX
Reply:Used my powcon 300 SMT-once, powered off my Lincon G9 (40 amps max. @ 220 single phase delivered off the G9's power plug)---for MIG. It's a 3 phase machine, that will run on single phase-but it's not 'hot'. It really needs 3 phase if you wish to do anything of consequence.       After that, I adapted a Lincoln suitcase feeder to the G9 for portable MIG, which worked well.Blackbird
Reply:id go for the miller trailblazer....I forgot how to change this.
Reply:When I first started out I ran my welder off of a coleman 7.5k and it lasted about 3 hours before it fried the electrical system on the generator. I then bought a generac xp8000 and the 30 amp plug was not enough for my stick welder then I finally broke down and bought a generac 15,000 watt machine and that thing worked great night and day difference. I could run my welder 2 1000 watt lights and have some one running a chopsaw while I was welding. The only draw back was it burned about 2 gallons of fuel an hour but the tank would last all day being about 15 gallons just sucked everyday putting about $50 in that thing. I ran it till I could afford a bobcat then kept upgrading as the money came. Looking back I wish I had bought a used bobcat in the first place would have saved time and money.Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
